Are you thinking of a new hot tub? Well I can give you one place you may have second thoughts about. Here is my personal experience with Family Leisure in a letter I addressed to them.

I do not know if there has been a change in ownership or not, as prior to making our significant purchase, we had heard overwhelming positive reviews and experiences that influenced our decision to select you for our hot tub purchase. However, after that, it has been anything but pleasant. We paid 50% down. We were called on 9/5 asking to setup delivery. We explained that work was still being completed and that we would call to set up a date. We called on 9/9, 9/11, and was told both times "we are giving your information to scheduling to set up your delivery." We heard nothing, NOTHING! i called again on 9/13 and 9/16 and given the same line, scheduling will call you. I called yet AGAIN on 9/18, 3 times no less and was FINALLY told, we need your remaining 50% payment for scheduling to call you. I paid over the phone on the same call and was told scheduling would call. NO CALL. After calling again on 9/19, I was told 'your tub will be delivered tomorrow (9/20). Guess what?!? NO DELIVERY SCHEDULED when I called today to ask about what time I should expect your team to arrive.

And to top it off after going through three or four more personnel i get, "oh we can't schedule a delivery without seeing pictures of the delivery path!!!" Are you kidding me?? Where was this information all along? So, now SUPPOSEDLY there is going to be a delivery on now MONDAY 9/23. At this point, I'm honestly ready to cancel your order and take my business elsewhere. I am SORELY disappointed in the lack of customer service and due diligence.

I was told it didn’t exist. I was even told it didn’t exist by personnel who literally worked on this. However, after almost 30 years of scouring radio stations, contacts in the industry and countless other outlets, I found what I considered to be the Holy Grail of Country music - Drake-Chenault’s 52 hour History of Country Music.

The show was produced by Drake-Chenault in 1982 and is a COMPREHENSIVE look at country music from its roots through 1982, the year the show was released. In a major coup, this 52 hour special is narrated by the legendary Ralph Emery. If you are enjoyed the PBS Ken Burns documentary 'Country Music - A Film By Ken Burns,' you will LOVE this!

Everything covered by the special is covered in these 52 hours and then some. While watching I thought to myself, if only Ken had reached out to us. Why? Because many quotes I have heard made secondhand by others in his documentary is made in first person here so it just adds another dimension.

For example, in the final days of Hank Williams' life, Hank Sr. is quoted by Hank, Jr. as having told Minnie Pearl that 'sometimes you just can't see the light.' This radio documentary has Minnie Pearl telling the story firsthand. The beauty of this is that in 1982, many of the legends that had since passed by the time Ken began his work were still alive and their own voices here. The set I found was the only known set known to exist!! To me, this is a priceless, one-of-a-kind piece professionally produced. Keep in mind, it was Drake-Chenault that produced the legendary 52 Hour History of Rock & Roll that was originally released in 1978 and updated for release in 1981. As far as content, I have not captured the detail so much as to document every single song but here are the titles of the 52 hours of PURE GOLD!Working to convert this to digital was a true joy!!Hour 1 - Hank WilliamsHour 2 - Early Years, Hits from the early years through 1939, Jimmy Rodgers, Carter Family, Red Foley, Ernest Tubb, Hank SnowHour 3 - Eddy Arnold, Lefty Frizzell, Webb Pierce, Hits of the 1940's & 1950'sHour 4 - Hank Thompson, Kitty Wells, Carl Smith, Faron YoungHour 5 - Jim Reeves, Ray PriceHour 6 - Elvis PresleyHour 7 - Hits of 1956-1959Hour 8 - Johnny CashHour 9 - Sonny James, Jerry Lee LewisHour 10 - Marty RobbinsHour 11 - Brenda Lee, Don Gibson, Mel TillisHour 12 - George JonesHour 13 - Buck Owens, Bill AndersonHour 14 - Hits of 1960-1963Hour 15 - Patsy Cline, Dottie West, Bobby BareHour 16 - Porter Wagoner, Hank Williams, Jr.Hour 17 - Johnny Horton, Roger Miller, David Houston, Jack Greene, Jim Ed BrownHour 18 - Willie NelsonHour 19 - Loretta LynnHour 20 - Merle HaggardHour 21 - Hits of 1964-1965, Chet Atkins, Hits of 1966-1967Hour 22 - Statler BrothersHour 23 - Charley PrideHour 24 - Glen Campbell, Lynn AndersonHour 25 - Waylon JenningsHour 26 - Tammy WynetteHour 27 - Johnny Cash Pt. 2Hour 28 - Johnny Paycheck, Tom T. I have been trying to work on this analog to digital project for 3 years and finally made it a priority and completed it this morning. These are promotional pieces for the California Special, a 6-hour radio special produced in 1975 by American Top 40 and American Country Countdown parent company, Watermark.

Watermark also produced a revised version of their 1971 special, The Elvis Presley Story in 1975. Both the California Special and EP Story were headed up by KHJ genius Ron Jacobs. The writer for both was best selling author Jerry Hopkins. Jerry was an American journalist and author best known for writing the first biographies of Elvis Presley and Jim Morrison of the Doors, as well as serving for 20 years as a correspondent and contributing editor of Rolling Stone magazine. He also penned several other biographies, wrote history and humor, and was a writer-producer for Mike Wallace, Steve Allen and Mort Sahl. In all, he published 37 books and authored one thousand magazine articles.

The host of the California Special was John Stewart, a singer/songwriter and RCA recording artist. The press notes state that John Stewart was a natural to be the host.

Jerry Hopkins said, "We were very fortunate in acquiring the services of John Stewart to be narrator for our California Special. He was born here, raised here, he's a veteran of the whole scene here, he's so into that whole era".

The "era" Hopkins speaks of is 1960 through 1975 and the music covered by the special is all the great Southern California hits of the period... all the unforgettable surf songs, car songs and girl songs by The Beach Boys, Jan and Dean, Rick Nelson to name but a few.

Stewart, probably best remembered for his seven year association with The Kingston Trio, has, for the past several years, been making it on his own as a single. Singing his own songs at club dates and concert tours has become a way of life. Now his intimate knowledge of the
music, the people and the Southern California life-style are all brought to the fore as he unfolds the whole fascinating story of an exciting episode in the annals of American popular music on the California Special.

I honestly don’t even know where to start or how to respond. The outpouring of well wishes for my birthday today, a milestone of 60 no less, has been overwhelming. In years past I diligently made a point to personally respond to each and everyone. However, the volume this year will make it quite a challenge. If I don’t hit everyone, it won’t be for lack of effort nor deliberate. We all know how this crazy platform kicks in a limits the number of likes, comments, etc. that one is allowed to make. Just know that I have read many and will definitely read every single one of your comments and that each one is truly appreciated.

After the 2023 I had, I’m simply grateful for 2024! I am so thankful for your outpouring and taking the time to write. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I am humbled and I am overwhelmed.

Sorry for the barrage of posts, I had a lot to say ‘on this date.’

This complete concert is a favorite in my collection. It was 67 years ago today on December 15, 1956 that Elvis Presley gave his farewell performance on the Louisiana Hayride, broadcast nationally on Shreveport's KWKH radio station.

Presley's contract with the Hayride's "every Saturday night" agreement still had a couple of years left to run, but Presley's busy schedule and commitments to other work made it impossible for him to appear every Saturday night to full fill the contract.

From the beginning, when he signed with new management and RCA Records in November 1955, Colonel Parker wanted to break away from the Hayride contract. In order to do that, the contract had to be broken for "a substantial amount of money." How much? A $10,000 payout was made to break the contract.

As a final gesture, Colonel Parker planned a farewell gig with the Hayride staff to raise money for the YMCA. Rather then performing at the Hayride's regular venue, the Municipal Memorial Auditorium, a much bigger venue was chosen to raise as much money as possible for the needed charity. The site selected was the Hirsch Youth Center at the Louisiana Fairgrounds.

9,000 hysterical fans turned out for the event, it was complete mania, "I'd never seen anything like it" said Hayride announcer Horace Logan "and I don't think I ever want to again, it was frightening". That day was true Presleymania!

It was a great day all around. Many people turned out to see Elvis, including old friends from his earliest Hayride days who had performed with him when he was was trying to make a name for himself - Hank Snow, Johnny Horton, Johnny Cash and others.

Some of these performers were never to see him again but the memories of the young Hillbilly Cat will forever be embedded in their memories.

The Memphis Flash gave his farewell gig that day then he was gone in a flash.

There are also two other things to celebrate that took place 67 years ago today.

1. It was the first time the phrase "Elvis Has Left The Building" was coined by Hayride announcer Horace Logan.

2. Director Hal Kantner was also at the final Hayride gig who described the event "mass hysteria". The concert also gave him inspiration for Elvis' second movie, Loving You

The Jordanaires provided their typically immaculate backing vocals, but it was Presley, front-and-center, who showed how incredibly dynamic and alive he was in 1956.

There's a hint of the singer Elvis was transfixed by in Las Vegas in November 1956 fronting Billy Ward and His Dominos while doing a series of Presley covers.

Elvis spoke about this singer during the "Million Dollar Quartet" jam at Sun Studios just days before. He found the fella's renditions of "Don't Be Cruel" and "Paralyzed" were "much better" than his own records. No wonder Elvis grabbed onto those arrangements. By the way, he didn't know it then, but that singer was 22 year-old Jackie Wilson.

Here's "Don't Be Cruel" from the same show, absolute perfection, probably the finest live version we'll ever have:

Historian Alan Hanson offers an interesting perspective on this concert with the Final Hayride Show, "Elvis the Pelvis" Began to Fade Away. Here’s a link to that story.

From the page The College of Rock and Roll Knowledge:

Every generation has experienced the death of one of their major music stars.

One of our parents’ generations biggest music superstars went missing on December 15, 1944. We say 'missing,' as he was a Major in the US Army at the time and that's what they called it. We are talking about Glenn Miller.

It was on that day that Miller's plane disappeared in thick fog somewhere over the English Channel. The fate of Miller and his passengers, en route to play a Christmas concert in Paris with his Air Force band, has never been officially determined. However, after exhaustive research, it was discovered years later that his plane likely was bombed over the Channel by US bombers releasing bombs from a scrubbed mission that night so they could land and Miller’s pilot unknowingly wandered into the designated drop zone. The bombers never saw him flying or knew he was at a lower altitude.

Miller was too old to be drafted for the war effort so he volunteered to join the Army to 'update' their band. This led to permission for Miller to form his 50-piece Army Air Force Band and take it to England in the summer of 1944, where he gave 800 performances.

While in England, Miller recorded a series of records at EMI owned Abbey Road Studios. The recordings the AAF band made in 1944 at Abbey Road were propaganda broadcasts for the Office of War Information. Many songs are sung in German by Johnny Desmond and Glenn Miller speaks in German about the war effort. Before Miller's disappearance, his music was used by World War II AFN radio broadcasting for entertainment and morale as well as counter-propaganda to denounce fascist oppression in Europe with even Miller once stating on radio: "America means freedom and there's no expression of freedom quite so sincere as music." Those words fit every generation since then.

Many of us grew up listening to Glenn's music. How many remember their parents playing it and, what was your favorite song of his.

RIP Glenn.
