I used to tell people the four lady ships were all the same ship. I was wrong, and I want to explain what actually changed my mind.
Start with scale, because this is the part people coming from other lines don't expect. Royal's newest ship holds around 5,600 passengers. Their Grandeur of the Seas, 28 years older, held 2,400. Same cruise line, wildly different vacations. Virgin has four ships. Scarlet 2020, Valiant 2021, Resilient 2022, Brilliant 2025. Same capacity, same layout, basically quadruplets.
So what IS different:
* Restaurants after dry dock. Scarlet came out with Lucky Lotus by Razzle Dazzle. Brilliant has its own new restaurant. Everything else on the menu lineup is the same across the fleet.
* The art. Genuinely different on each ship, and fun if you like that sort of thing. Not a booking decision.
* Cabin colors. Scarlet and Valiant match. Resilient runs more muted. If the bright palette isn't your thing, that's your ship.
* Small layout stuff. Shop placement, handrails at the pool, a few more cabanas. Meatball came back onto Scarlet after dry dock and did not notice a single thing.
* Entertainment, and this is the real one. Every ship has its own shows and its own drag show. Club Caliente is Valiant only. Lola's Library and Another Rose are Resilient. Studio 72 and We Fancy are Valiant. Brilliant has its own lineup. The Virgin Voyages entertainment page stays updated by ship, so go look before you book.
* Your Happenings Cast. Instead of one cruise director making announcements, you get a team. I'll genuinely change what I do on a sailing based on which cast members are onboard.
Here's the thing though. If you got this far you're probably thinking there's barely a difference between the ships, and you'd be mostly right. Which means you're asking the wrong question.
The question isn't which ship. It's which SAILING. After 20 sailings, no two have ever felt the same, and it's almost never the ship that did it.
Three things shape who's on your sailing: the price, the length, and the embarkation port. The four and five night sailings out of Miami skew younger with way more energy, because you don't need much time off work and Miami is easy to get to. More people at the parties, more people out late. I'm on a 10 night right now and the vibe is completely different. Not empty, just different.
So work backwards from what you actually want. Here for the food? Sail around the Eat and Drink Festival in July. Coming back for a second or third time? Switch ships purely for new entertainment. Want the nightlife but longer? Do back to back four and fives out of Miami instead of one long sailing. For my mom's next one I picked Brilliant for the new entertainment and an Autumn Leaves back to back, and I fully expect that to be a mellow, wellness-and-views kind of sailing. That's the point.
One honest caveat: you can't fully predict it. There might be a big corporate group onboard and suddenly nobody's at the pool because they're all in sessions. It's a little like the weather. Plan well, then relax.
