Nothing has ever driven across Mars at night. This is the one thing the rovers do not do.

The reason is power. Curiosity and Perseverance both run on radioisotope thermoelectric
generators, which produce a steady but very modest output β€” around 110 watts, roughly the draw
of a bright household bulb. Driving is expensive. Heating is more expensive still, and Martian
nights at Gale Crater routinely fall below minus 70 Celsius, cold enough to crack electronics
that are not actively kept warm. So the rovers spend the night stationary, pouring almost
everything they have into survival heaters, and they wait for morning.

There is a further problem, which is that they cannot see. Mars rovers navigate by
photogrammetry β€” they photograph the ground ahead, build a three-dimensional terrain model,
identify hazards, and plot a route. That entire process depends on daylight. Driving blind
across unmapped terrain with no way to recover from a mistake is not a risk any mission has
been willing to take with hardware that took a decade to build and cannot be repaired.

So the night side of Mars remains, functionally, unobserved from the ground. We have
photographed the sky from a standstill. We have never watched the terrain move beneath us in
the dark.

If we ever do, the view will be genuinely unlike anything on Earth. With almost no atmosphere
to scatter light, the stars will not shimmer or soften. They will sit rigid and hard overhead
while the ground pours past beneath the wheels β€” the near world in constant motion, the far
world absolutely still.

That contrast is what distance actually looks like. Everything close to you rushes by.
Everything far enough away does not move at all.

This planet has no sun. It never had one for long, and it will never have one again.

Rogue planets β€” the formal term is free-floating planetary-mass objects β€” are worlds that
formed inside a solar system and were then thrown out of it. Planetary systems are chaotic
places while they are assembling. Young planets migrate, tug on each other, and occasionally one
gets a gravitational slingshot violent enough to exceed the star's escape velocity. It leaves.
There is no mechanism to bring it back.

Current estimates suggest there may be more of these than there are stars in the galaxy. A
microlensing survey published in 2023 put the population of Earth-mass rogues at roughly twenty
for every star in the Milky Way. If that figure holds, sunless worlds are not an exotic edge
case. They are the most common kind of planet there is, and we simply cannot see them, because
a planet with no star to illuminate it emits almost nothing.

The surface conditions are close to the coldest possible. With no stellar input, temperature is
governed by residual formation heat and radioactive decay in the interior, and the exterior
settles toward the temperature of deep space itself, around 3 kelvin above absolute zero.
Atmospheres freeze out entirely and fall to the ground as ice.

The sky, however, is extraordinary. There is no sun to wash it out, no daylight cycle, and no
seasons β€” the darkness is permanent and total. Every star visible from that surface is visible
all of the time. It is, without competition, the best view of the galaxy available anywhere.

And there is one further possibility that keeps this from being purely bleak. A rogue planet
with a thick enough hydrogen atmosphere, or a sufficiently hot interior, could plausibly
maintain liquid water beneath an ice shell using its own internal heat alone. No sunlight
required. If life can begin in that kind of environment β€” and we genuinely do not know whether
it can β€” then most of the habitable real estate in the universe is drifting alone in the dark,
under a sky like this one, with nobody to look up at it.

There is nowhere in the inner solar system with a darker sky than the one above this ground.

Three things ruin a night sky, and the far side of the Moon is free of all of them. There is no
atmosphere, so nothing scatters light and nothing makes stars shimmer β€” they sit absolutely
fixed, hard and steady, with no twinkle whatsoever. There is no artificial light, obviously.
And critically, because the Moon is tidally locked, this hemisphere is turned permanently away
from Earth. It never receives earthshine. It has never once seen our planet.

That last point has consequences beyond aesthetics. The far side is also permanently shielded
from terrestrial radio transmission, which makes it the quietest radio environment humans have
access to. Astronomers have wanted an observatory there for decades, because signals from the
early universe that are drowned out everywhere else would be detectable from that surface.

The darkness is also unforgiving. With no air to scatter sunlight, there is no twilight and no
soft transition. Shadows on the lunar surface are absolute β€” step into one and you effectively
disappear, because nothing bounces light back into it. Contrast is brutal in a way that has
consistently made lunar photography difficult.

The boot prints will outlast almost everything else in the frame. There is no wind and no water
on the Moon, and the only real erosion is micrometeorite bombardment, which works at a rate of
roughly a millimetre every few million years. Every footprint left by the Apollo crews is still
sitting exactly where it was pressed in, essentially unchanged.

They will still be there long after every human structure on Earth has been erased.

It is the middle of the day here, and the stars are all still out.

Pluto orbits at an average distance of about 3.7 billion miles from the Sun, roughly forty
times further than Earth. Light falls off with the square of distance, which means noon on
Pluto delivers somewhere in the region of one-nine-hundredth of the sunlight we receive. That
sounds like darkness, and it is not. It is approximately the brightness of Earth at deep
twilight, about twenty-five minutes after sunset β€” dim, but comfortably enough to read a book
by. Planetary scientists have a term for it: Pluto time. There is a moment each evening on
Earth when your surroundings are lit exactly as brightly as Pluto's are at midday.

The difference is what the Sun looks like. From here it no longer resolves as a disc. It is
simply the brightest star in the sky, roughly a thousand times brighter than our full Moon but
still a point of light, and it never clears the rest of the field. The stars do not disappear
at dawn on Pluto because there is barely any dawn and almost no atmosphere to scatter light
across the sky.

What atmosphere exists is remarkable in its own right. It is mostly nitrogen, extremely thin,
and it partially freezes and falls to the ground as the orbit carries Pluto further from the
Sun, then sublimates back into gas as it returns. The atmosphere breathes on a 248-year cycle.

The ground is nitrogen ice, cold enough β€” around 40 kelvin β€” that water ice behaves like solid
rock and forms genuine mountain ranges. The reddish deposits scattered across it are tholins,
organic compounds produced when ultraviolet light breaks apart methane in the upper atmosphere
and the fragments recombine into heavier molecules that drift down and stain the surface.

We had no clear image of any of this until July 2015, when New Horizons arrived after a
nine-and-a-half-year flight. It had a single pass. It was travelling too fast to stop, and it
is still going.
