if were judging how financially free we are based on not having to work, but then we exercise that financial freedom by.. continuing to work.. doesn’t the math change??

i feel like gen z is realizing that you don’t have to wait until you have millions in the bank to start exercising forms of financial freedom!! in the forms of career optionality, designing careers you actually don’t want to retire from, taking time off, etc.

i’d love to know: what would make you feel “free” 🌞

you should be treating more things in your life like an experiment.

i think one of the biggest reasons we don’t start things is because we’re afraid of wasting time if they don’t work out.

what if i spend a year building the side hustle and decide i don’t want to run a business? what if i start creating content and it goes nowhere? what if i learn the new skill and never actually use it?

but the whole point of an experiment is that you don’t know the outcome yet.

you’re not committing to doing something forever. you’re giving yourself enough time to try it, collect information, and decide what you want to do next.

and i think we’d take a lot more interesting chances in our careers if we stopped requiring every use of our time to have a guaranteed return.

you know those people where it feels like they do a million cool things & opportunities just kinda flock to them??

you can be that person too!! it doesn’t happen overnight, it happens slowly one thing at a time until one day you’ve built multiple income streams, businesses & maybe the opportunity to be an advisor for a cool startup like Ditch !!

p.s. if you’re paying off debt, the ditch app has helped users pay off millions of dollars of debt so far you should check it out 🥹

i don’t want to penny-pinch my way through my 20s and 30s just so i can maybe retire in my 40s or 50s and… do nothing.

the financial freedom movement was largely built around the idea of early retirement: work hard, save aggressively, invest as much as possible, hit your number, and earn the right to never work again.

and i LOVE the idea of earning back more of your time.

but lately i’ve been asking myself a different question:

what would it look like to build a career i don’t want to retire from?

because i actually think most ambitious people want to work. we want to build things. create things. solve problems. have ideas and see what happens when we follow them.

we just want more control over what we work on, who we work with, and how much of our life work gets to consume.

and that changes the math of financial freedom.

so many of the same principles still apply. i still live below my means. i still invest. i still want to build enough wealth that i never have to work for money.

but i’m not sure i need to optimize every financial decision around hitting an arbitrary number at 45 that assumes i’ll never earn another dollar again.

especially because i’ve watched people reach financial freedom in real life. they’ve sold businesses. built rental portfolios. accumulated enough money that working became completely optional.

and you know what basically none of them did?

stop working forever 🤣

they just became a lot more selective about the work they said yes to.

that’s the version of financial freedom i’m interested in building.

enough money to make work optional.
a career interesting enough that i still choose it.

i call it modern financial freedom 🫶

this is what I think the FIRE movement got wrong ⬇️

early in my 20s I learned about this concept of “fire” (Financial Independence Retire Early) & saw how everyday people were figuring out how to retire decades early than normal.

the roadmap was basically: live extremely frugally in your 20s and 30s, invest as much as possible, buy rental properties, and do that again and again until you can retire in your 40s or 50s.

but I think there’s a paradox: if you’re the type of person that can achieve it, I don’t think you’re the type of person that would enjoy retiring at 40.

I think ambitious people really enjoy the pursuit of something. which in my opinion changes the math from “what’s my retirement number” to “how can I invest into building a career I don’t want to retire from”.

this week’s episode of The Life You Love Podcast is all about this topic of modern financial freedom 🎙️ comment “wealth” & i’ll send it to you!

the high-earning corporate trap is that the higher your salary goes, the less freedom you actually have 🥲

does everyone need a side hustle or a second stream of income, no. but if you ever want more calendar autonomy than you have right now chances are your corporate job alone isn’t going to get you there 🥲

i would love to say i’ve allocated every dollar perfectly in my 20s but truthfully, i’ve made a lot of mistakes 🥲

building multiple income streams over the last 5 years gave me room to be human and make mistakes. i learned that there’s a hard floor of how much you can save, but truly no ceiling on what you can earn

financial advice that i ignored 🫢

what i DID do:
• prioritized building multiple income streams as early as possible
• invested in a mix of retirement AND non-retirement accounts so not all of my money is locked up until retirement
• paid off all of my other debt, so even though we splurge on housing, our mortgage is our only debt payment so it’s not eating up an insane amount of our monthly budget
• reinvested $$ into building up my skills and business, to not only increase my income but also build a career i don’t want to retire from 🌞

if you’re seeing this, hi welcome 🤍

you want financial freedom, but the advice of “live extremely frugally to hopefully one day retire early”, doesn’t sound appealing anymore.

something that i’ve learned is: if you’re ambitious enough to pursue financial freedom, you’re probably too ambitious to retire early and lay on the beach for the rest of your life.

hi im erin 🤍 a 27 year old that went from one corporate job to 8 income streams, who’s learning how to build a career she doesn’t want to retire from!

i don’t want to be rich rich, i want to be calendar rich 🌞

i have a vid coming this week on why i don’t share net worth updates anymore & part of that is because i think it’s an outdated metric. we should be focused more on what gives us calendar autonomy & gauging our % to financial freedom solely based on that!!
