operating as KAZI 88.7 is the oldest community station in Austin. The station is a listener-supported, non-commercial community radio station, staffed almost entirely by volunteers who work together out of a sense of commitment and concern for our community. KAZI was the dream of the late Dr. John Warfield, professor of African-American Studies at the University of Texas. His vision was to create

a noncommercial station that served the needs of the African-American community. With generous funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and loaned tower space from LBJ-S Broadcasting, KAZI began transmitting on August 29, 1982. Although KAZI was launched with the aid of public funding, it currently survives entirely on donations from listeners and support from commercial sponsors. The station also receives monies from the City of Austin for the broadcast of the weekly City Council meeting. KAZI remains a strong force in the Austin Community with its unique mix of R&B, Soul, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Gospel, Blues, Reggae, Zydeco, Talk, Community Information, Independent News and more… KAZI also takes pride in supporting and promoting local artists as well as national artists on small independent labels. Since 1982, KAZI has been serving Austin and the surrounding communities. The station maintains a family atmosphere with a volunteer staff that loves what they do, which keeps the listening audiences always wanting more.

Big shoutout to all the folks who have been coming into KAZI this past week or so! Today we had Fred Rouse III who is in town from Fort Worth for a special event at the Blackbird Redemption Song exhibit at the Umlauf Sculpture Garden today at 6 PM. Rouse is a civil rights activist who is descended from Fred Rouse, a Black man who was lynched in Tarrant County in 1921 and has been instrumental in memorializing the incident.

We also had Vanessa Fuentes join us on The Grapevine last Friday! The Austin City Council representative for District 2 which covers Southeast Austin talked about her priorities for the new year and the importance of representing working families.

Musicians Uncle Roy and Spice along with Sweet Limb and comedians Niki Coleman and Chuy Zarate also came thru the studio to start out the new year! We’ve been having some great conversations and look to keep it going! Douglas The Professor is on right now so keep it locked to the left at KAZI 88.7 FM or you can listen online at kazifm.org
