operating as KAZI 88.7 is the oldest community station in Austin. The station is a listener-supported, non-commercial community radio station, staffed almost entirely by volunteers who work together out of a sense of commitment and concern for our community. KAZI was the dream of the late Dr. John Warfield, professor of African-American Studies at the University of Texas. His vision was to create

a noncommercial station that served the needs of the African-American community. With generous funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and loaned tower space from LBJ-S Broadcasting, KAZI began transmitting on August 29, 1982. Although KAZI was launched with the aid of public funding, it currently survives entirely on donations from listeners and support from commercial sponsors. The station also receives monies from the City of Austin for the broadcast of the weekly City Council meeting. KAZI remains a strong force in the Austin Community with its unique mix of R&B, Soul, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Gospel, Blues, Reggae, Zydeco, Talk, Community Information, Independent News and more… KAZI also takes pride in supporting and promoting local artists as well as national artists on small independent labels. Since 1982, KAZI has been serving Austin and the surrounding communities. The station maintains a family atmosphere with a volunteer staff that loves what they do, which keeps the listening audiences always wanting more.

We’ve been having a bunch of really cool folks stopping by the station this week! Big shoutout to Jackie Venson who was here yesterday to talk about the free concert she’ll be headlining at the Austin Central Library this Sunday afternoon! You can pull up on the 26th from 1 - 5 PM.

We also had Nelson Linder come by for ATX Now In Color which is hosted by Alberta Philips and runs every Tuesday from noon until 1 PM. Linder is the president of the Austin NAACP and has guided the organization for twenty five years!

The folks from The Poet House and every.Word Poetry also pulled up to talk about their founder Michael Hatcher’s new choreopoem, “The Blasphemy of a Good Bath,” which opens tonight at The Vortex Theater and continues until Sunday. There are after parties on Friday and Saturday so make sure to check it out!

We had Gabi and Mindy from the Mexic-Arte Museum come by this morning to talk about their Dia De Los Mu***os parade happening this Saturday in downtown Austin from noon to 6 PM! It’s their biggest event of the year so make sure to pull up!

Big shoutout to Kathleen Stimpert from the UT Landmarks program who pulled up to talk about their upcoming events! Kathleen remembered when we were still off Wall Street so it was great to have a conversation with her about the Austin arts scene and how it’s evolved over time.
