Labor Day is a day off because workers, a lot of them Latino, organized until they won one. The eight-hour day, the weekend, the right to a safe shift. None of it came free.

You know this work. Your parents did it. Maybe you still do. It paid rent and covered tuition and kept family fed on both sides of a border.

Here is what the numbers say now. The U.S. Latino economy is worth around $4.4 trillion, and Latinos have accounted for most of the growth in the American workforce over the past decade. The country leans on this labor whether it says so or not.

So rest today without guilt. Then, this week, talk openly with one amiga about what you earn. That conversation is how the wage gap starts to close.

Our grandmothers watched other people decide the things that shaped their lives and were never asked what they wanted. Someone in your family could not vote at all.

On November 3 you get to choose. You get to honor the women who made us, and help the ones who this time cannot vote but really need us.

Dolly built an empire out of a persona everyone underestimated, then gave most of it away. She let people call her too much and just kept being more of it.

Honestly, I don’t think any of us have figured out how to process this yet. Country music was built by men until she showed up and cracked it wide open. Somewhere in there “Jolene” crossed over into cumbia too. Jenni Rivera loved her, and you could hear it every time her daughter Chiquis sang that song on stage.

That’s not history to me. That’s legacy. She made room for every single one of us who got told we were too much.

Rest in power, Dolly.

National Latina Day brought together vendors and honorees this past weekend, and we asked everyone the same question: what's your Latina power?

One mom of five said it's doing ten things at once and still showing up for her kids every time. Another said staying confident even when it's hard. Someone else said making sure what she's built gets passed down to the next generation.

Claudia Macias has her own definition of Latina power, and it’s not about being the loudest one in the room.
