It was around 2:15 AM. I was walking home after a brutal late-night shift. The alleyway was completely dead. The only sound was the scraping of my own sneakers against the pavement.
Halfway through the lane, the atmosphere completely shifted. The air didn't just get cold; it felt incredibly heavy, like the oxygen was suddenly sucked out of the space. My breath hitched. Then, I felt this distinct, icy pressure right on the back of my neck. It felt like someone was standing close enough to press their face against mine, but from behind.
And then came the whisper. It wasn’t just one voice. It sounded like a hollow, overlapping choir of breathless whispers mimicking a human tone.
"Don't look back"
Every logical part of my brain screamed at me to just run forward. But panic does weird things to you. It triggers this primal, stupid urge to see what is hunting you. My body moved before I could consciously stop it.
I spun around.
I had my phone out to use the flashlight, and out of sheer, blind panic, I snapped a photo just as I turned. I think my brain was trying to use the screen flash to blind whatever was there.
Look at the photo.
Look past me in the foreground. Look all the way down to the end of the alley, right under the dark awning past the hanging clothes.
Those aren't shadows. Those are two tall, pale, featureless figures just standing there in the dark, watching me. The second my eyes locked onto them, a wave of absolute, paralyzing dread hit me. I don't even remember running after that. I just remember the blinding terror of knowing I was completely exposed.
I ran like hell. I didn't stop until I was inside my room with the door locked and barricaded. I haven't slept a single wink, and the sun is already coming up.
But here is the most terrifying part, and the reason I’m typing this with shaking hands: The whispering hasn't stopped.
It's no longer out in the alley. It’s right outside my second-story bedroom window now. It's much softer this time, almost sounding amused.
If you ever find yourself walking down a dark, empty street at night and you feel that sudden chill... please learn from my mistake. Don't be curious. Don't check your phone.
