Velveteen Stories

Velveteen Stories Handcrafted stories, bound forever. But our books are not for packing away in chests or putting on the highest shelves.

Velveteen Stories is a boutique storytelling service dedicated to preserving and illuminating your most important memories in beautiful, hand-bound books. We create these books to be read, shared, passed around a room, and—let’s be honest—obsessed over. We think it’s a tragedy when a story fades from our mind and no one can remember exactly how it went. We like to think we’re slowing down this disappearing act.

A MAN OF GREAT SPIRITS

When up for a tipple, Mike was known for his style,
His balancing acts and card-playing guile.
The stories surrounding the man in this tale
May strike some as fiction in sheer scope and scale.

Once on a visit to the Emerald Isle,
Mike and his cohorts had time to while.
They stopped for refreshment, some wine—just a splash,
But soon they discovered they’d emptied the stash!

O, Chateauneuf De Pape! ’Twas a night of French vice!
They drank every bottle and drove up the price!

Never a bloke to pass on a test,
Mike undertook a most deadly quest:
“I’ll have a yard of ale, if you please.”
And he fought the good fight but was brought to his knees.

A few illustrations and poems from our latest book. To Mike Tuohy and 70 years well lived!

A BOY

Mike knew his calling as a wee tot;
Studies were crucial but sport was his lot.
He discovered a knack for all shapes of ball.
Football and rugby—he tackled them all.

His spirit and zeal took him outside the norm,
At his mother’s behest, he mastered the form
Of a classic left-hander—’twas a coup on the wicket.
Who would have thought that the boy could play cricket?

Did this southpaw conversion give Mike the lead?
He was only a boy. It remained to be seen.

Storytelling is powerful and there are incredible examples springing up all around us. Two people that keep us coming back: Mark Maron (WTF with Mark Maron) and Stephen Tobolowsky (The Tobolowsky Files).
