A friend asked me to help her become a minimalist. I sent her this to read to get started before we start purging and organizing next month.
Become a minimalist. It is a journey, not a destination.
Focusing on what really matters to you and then eliminate excess. Determine what is truly important to you in life. Set clear goals.
1. Declutter
Begin by getting rid of items you no longer need or use. Set timers to begin getting tasks done. Sort through your belongings and decide what is essential and on whether they serve a purpose or bring you happiness. Start small with one area at a time, like your linen closet or kitchen pantry, drawers or cabinets. Even just a shelf in a pantry.
Set appointments in your calendar and stick with them. From a couple hours a day to a full day of purging.
2. Assess your material possessions. Decide if items add value to your life. Make piles and consider donating, selling, or discarding it.
3. Start thinking experiences over things.
Shift your focus from acquiring material possessions to enjoying experiences and relationships. Memories stay with us forever.
4. Practice Mindful Consumption. Cut back on new purchases. Avoid impulse buying. Be mindful of what you bring into your home. Only buy things you truly need or you enjoy. Rule of thumb. If purchasing something think if you have similar item and if you truly need it. Consider donating older similar items when bringing in new items.
5. Practice gratitude. Appreciate what you have instead of striving for more and more. Less is better. Practicing gratitude can help shift your mindset from scarcity to abundance.
