The Truth About Guns

The Truth About Guns The truth about guns. No more, no less. We've been at it ever since.

The Truth About Guns was founded in February of 2010, to explore the ethics, morality, business, politics, culture, technology, practice, strategy, dangers and fun of guns. And apparently, we've struck a nerve, for our little site has grown exponentially, to serve up over 2 million page views. That's kind of remarkable, in that we've built the site on word-of-mouth, strong writing, and an attitude that you won't find anywhere else.

The group’s position is short and simple:

“Sound suppressors are mechanical devices attached to the barrel of a firearm designed to reduce harmful impulse noise of fi****ms at its source. CDC research has shown that the only potentially effective noise control method to reduce [shooters’] noise exposure from gunfire is through the use of noise suppressors that can be attached to the end of the gun barrel. Suppressors reduce muzzle blast noise by up to 30 decibels. Their benefit is additive when used with ear-level hearing protection devices such as circumaural muffs or ear plugs. The American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery endorses the use of firearm suppressors as an effective method of reducing the risk of hearing loss, especially when used in conjunction with conventional hearing protective measures.”

Even if President Biden’s decision in pardoning his son and not trusting the move to President-Elect Trump was purely made for personal and emotional reasons after reflection while spending the Thanksgiving holiday with Hunter Biden, his earlier forceful denials that he wouldn’t issue a pardon simply reinforces his detractor’s accusations that he is a “liar.” Indeed, it only hardens the resolve of those who cast their votes for Trump that it was the right decision to re-elect him.

Biden’s pardon is emblematic of the way much of the Democratic Party has operated, and clearly, the way Kamala Harris’ campaign, was run. Say whatever you need to at the moment for political expediency and then do what you really want to do once you’re in position to make that decision.

I have long said that the attack on 80% receivers as being “too easy to complete” has been disingenuous, a statement supported by authorities and companies now setting their sights on 3D-printing, which is effectively a 0% home build. If starting from scratch is considered illegal, then let’s face the facts, the goal is to prohibit Americans from exercising their Constitutional right to construct a firearm at home, a move that I find in contempt of the Supreme Court’s Bruen decision, which directs authorities to respect the historical traditions of the Second Amendment.

Since November 1, nobody has been able to legally purchase a firearm in Washington State because of a computer system in the state’s Secure Automated Fi****ms E-Check (SAFE) system being “compromised.” That’s the program through which Washington conducts its background checks, instead of just going through the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check (NICS) system.

When employees realized the system had been “compromised” on November 1 (they won’t say what that means), rather than figuring out how to fix it or putting some standby system into place, they immediately shut it down, making it impossible for gun dealers to run background checks for purchases. Since private sales are outlawed in the state, that effectively shut down all legal gun buying and selling.

When it comes to ammunition lifespan, the old adage “store it cool, dry and dark” remains the golden rule. Whether you’re preserving your rimfire plinking rounds, centerfire hunting cartridges or shotgun shells for clay sports, proper storage is key to maintaining performance and reliability.

Remember, while ammunition can last for decades under ideal conditions, it’s not immortal. Regular inspection, rotation of stock and being mindful of the age and storage history of your ammo will serve you well. When in doubt, especially for critical applications like hunting or competition, opt for newer factory loads to ensure peak performance.

By understanding the factors that affect ammunition lifespan and taking steps to mitigate them, you can ensure that your rounds will be ready when you are, whether you’re introducing a youngster to the joys of shooting with a classic .22 LR rifle, taking your centerfire rifle out for a long-range session or simply enjoying a day at the range with friends. After all, in the world of shooting sports, reliability is king, and proper ammo care is the crown jewel of preparedness.

While the country celebrates the election of President Trump, Democrat dumpster fire states like Colorado continue to remind us of how much contempt they have for the inalienable rights of Americans. With the Associated Press calling the race Wednesday morning, the state’s Proposition KK is likely to pass with roughly 54 percent of Coloradans voting in favor of the measure.

The proposition would effectively impose a 6.5 percent excise tax on dealer sales of fi****ms, ammunition, and accessories. The tax will apply to any dealer making more than $20,000 annually, and those sellers may choose to absorb the tax or pass it on to their customers. Exempt from the tax will be active-duty military and law enforcement personnel, placing most tax-paying citizens on the proverbial lower deck of the Titanic.

In light of last week’s contentious election, one thing remains steadfast and clear: the unwavering commitment of our veterans who fought to protect the freedoms that make America what it is…a country where we can disagree, but also work together to support the common good and build a future of promise for all Americans. These men and women serve not a political party but the principles of liberty, justice and the Constitution itself. They’ve defended our rights—including our Second Amendment rights—through storms of conflict, division and uncertainty.

On this Veterans Day, as the nation processes and debates the direction forward, we pause to honor the selfless service of those who have dedicated their lives to defending our freedom. No matter the challenges or shifts in leadership, the sacrifices of our veterans are a constant reminder of the values that unite us. To all who have served, we extend our heartfelt thanks and a solemn promise: we will continue to honor and protect the rights you’ve safeguarded with such courage.

If you enjoy your freedoms as an American, thank a veteran today.

Trump said in May he will end the more than 50 executive orders Joe Biden has issued about guns and the Second Amendment.

Biden has signed executive orders covering homemade kit guns that do not use serial numbers, stabilizing braces for ARs, which he wanted the owners to have to register as short-barreled rifles under the National Fi****ms Act, as well as safe storage requirements. Biden even created a task force to consider 3D-printed fi****ms and fully automatic conversion devices that are already regulated as machine guns.

“In my second term, we will roll back every Biden attack on the Second Amendment — the attacks are fast and furious — starting the minute that Crooked Joe shuffles his way out of the White House,” Trump said.

Trump told senior NRA executives he will fire Steve Dettelbach, who was Joe Biden’s second choice to lead the ATF.

As TTAG readers are well aware, the presidency was a must-win race after American gun owners suffered the last four years under President Joe Biden’s anti-gun administration. Harris had promised to institute even more gun control schemes, but the loss has likely produced her last time in the political limelight.

Of course, gun-rights organizations, including Gun Owners of America, were elated with Trump’s victory.

“Kamala Harris would have continued weaponizing the power of government against the Second Amendment rights of the people,” GOA Senior Vice President Eric Pratt said in a press release from early this morning, “We’re thrilled to be charting a far different and brighter course with President Trump, who has promised to repeal the Biden-Harris infringements within his first week in office. Rather than going on defense, we’re already preparing to help the Trump Administration repeal gun control and restore Second Amendment rights.”

It’s not like anyone over the age of four in America isn’t already painfully aware that today is voting day, but we’re still gong to add our reminder to the chorus of calls to vote because this election is so important. Gun owners across the country are encouraged to head to the polls today, Nov. 5, and make their voices heard by supporting candidates who stand for Second Amendment rights. While presidential elections often capture the spotlight, voting in Senate, House and state-level races is crucial to protecting and preserving the right to bear arms. Local and state lawmakers hold significant influence over gun policy, from concealed carry regulations to hunting rights, making these races just as impactful for firearm owners.

Pro-gun candidates at every level are working to defend the rights of lawful gun owners. Casting a ballot isn’t just a chance to support these individuals but an opportunity to ensure that Second Amendment protections remain strong in your community and beyond. Take a few moments to research which candidates align with your values and make a plan to vote today. Every vote counts in preserving the rights and freedoms that are core to the gun-owning community.

Halloween, that night of childish horror, is upon us like the whitetail rut and what better time to ponder the best defensive options against the season’s most terrifying villains than as the sun begins to set. Let’s be honest, if any of us were a character in the top horror movies, we wouldn’t hide in a closet and merely wait for our end to come via knife slashing, hockey mask wearing, thrift store apparel reject or walk into a dark barn looking for Barbara—unless she’s super hot AND unless we were strapped like the Terminator looking to s***f Sarah Connor. So, let’s consider what firearm might finally put these slasher stars down—for good—and give you a fighting chance to walk away physically unscathed…even if your mind remains a little freaked out.

In a shocking turn of events, Fort Wayne, Indiana, police have determined that a high school football player, initially reported as a tragic victim and the lone person to die from a mass shooting at a weekend Halloween party, was in fact the aggressor who entered the party and began shooting. Willie Ivy III, 17, opened fire after forcing his way into the crowded party, injuring nine people ranging in ages from 14 to 20 before an armed partygoer returned fire, killing him in what authorities have determined was an act of justifiable self-defense. Interestingly, despite the intense initial coverage surrounding Ivy’s death portraying him as a loving, ambitious member of his school football team and another tragic case of an innocent black youth caught up in gun violence, when it was learned he was the one who opened fire first, media attention of the case went comparatively dark.

Back in September 2023 the FBI released the 2022 crimes statistics and reported that violent crime in the nation had dropped by 2.1%. Hurray! The White House took a victory lap and it has been a consistent talking point during this election year. Here’s where the “but” comes in. The FBI quietly, and with no reason nor explanation, revised the data and our nation’s violent crime actually increased by 4.5%. Hmm seems like deja vu all over again. Didn’t this just happen with the Bureau of Labor Statistics over-estimating job growth? Violent crime includes murders, rapes, robberies and aggravated assaults. Thousands of these crimes were not in the FBI’s original data. Why?

The cause of this new ammo shortage is different. Global instability with wars in the Middle East and Ukraine is draining the market of gunpowder. Artillery shells use copious amounts of gunpowder—not the exact kind in your 308 Wi******er cartridge—but it all comes from nitrocellulose, the key material in producing gunpowder and other munitions propellants. Nitrocellulose is not just used in producing gunpowder, but is also used to manufacture paints, ink and other finishes. Nitrocellulose is an agricultural product with Thailand, China and India the largest producers. The U.S. is a major importer. According to the Washington Times, members of Congress approached the Biden administration on getting ahead of the shortage back in April of this year. The intent of the Ammunition Supply Chain Act was to require the Biden administration to submit a report to Congress about the current state of the domestic supply of necessary components for smokeless gunpowder. No such report, however, has been provided by the Biden administration.

In releasing the guide, noted in addition to answer questions the press has had about Harris on guns, they hope it will also “help with additional unanswered questions that should be asked by the press in the future.” While a great tool for the press, the guide also serves as a valuable tool to voters, particularly those who may own a firearm or want to one day own one, but are not necessarily ardent members of the 2A community. It will also serve voters who have no interest in or little knowledge of fi****ms issues personally, but do care about their rights as American citizens or for the newcomers to this country, the rights they will have should they ever earn citizenship.

Franklin Armory was the first to release a binary kit for the G***k 17 and 22, and they’re the first to do it for the G***k 19 as well. The new G-S193 is the only pull-and-release trigger for G***ks that allows shooters to actively select between regular semiautomatic and Binary firing modes, and still safely cancel the release round.

The G-S193 is designed to work with the 9mm G***k 19 Gen 3 pistol. The binary kits for G***ks have a bit more to them than the trigger-based kits of Franklin’s other binary systems. The G series kits come as a whole new slide assembly, along with a trigger assembly. As a result of this you get a whole new slide, with some nice features to it....The tritium front and rear sights, optics cut and other features are all what you’d see on a premium slide to begin with. They’re nice upgrades over most stock Gen 3 G***ks slides, and you get the binary mode on top of that.

“This is not going to be an opportunity for folks to take advantage of people,” DeSantis said. “If you think you’re going to go in and loot, you got another thing coming. Now, you go into somebody’s house after the storm passes, thinking that you’re going to be able to commit crimes, you’re going to get in really serious trouble. And quite frankly, you don’t know what’s behind that door in a Second Amendment state.”

DeSantis’s remarks echoed statements he made during past storms, such as Hurricane Idalia in 2023 and Hurricane Ian in 2022. He referenced the well-known slogan, “You loot, we shoot,” which has become a familiar sentiment in the aftermath of disasters.
