Sickle cell anemia is a serious inherited blood disorder in which red blood cells, normally round and flexible, take on a rigid, crescent (sickle) shape. These sickled cells break apart easily and block blood flow, leading to chronic anemia, severe pain episodes, increased risk of infections, and potential organ damage. While it primarily affects people of African descent and some Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and Indian populations, it is a global health issue. Advances in treatment—including bone marrow transplantation, gene therapy, and newer disease-modifying drugs—offer hope, but many patients still face lifelong challenges.
