GISH Collective GRAVITY IS STRONGER HERE

The GISH Collective is a group of social-documentary photographers and wri Jakob Layman and Phyllis B.

Dooney, the founding photographers of the GISH Collective, have been shooting in Greenville for roughly 4 years now. Photographer Aaron Turner and writer Jardine Libaire joined the team in 2015. The GISH agenda is not to appreciate the “single photograph” but rather to responsibly and innovatively collect and curate material so it culminates in a prismatic view of photography and place, initiating

a conversation about how photography enables us to look at ourselves and at each other. GISH incites self-reflection in an alternate mirror to the mainstream media, and provides a gateway to empowerment, to agency of voice, and to a sense of community.

“Man is the only picture-making animal in the world. He alone of all the inhabitants of the earth has the capacity and passion for pictures . . . Poets, prophets, and reformers are all picture-makers, and this ability is the secret of their power and achievements: they see what ought to be by the reflection of what is, and endeavor to remove the contradiction.” —Frederick Douglass

Greenville is an important site for study and portrayal because of the complex interconnectedness of race, American history, socioeconomics, amplified artistic and cultural traditions, and geopolitics that all collide and connect, defining this city and echoing other American cities.

"GRAVITY IS STRONGER HERE is more than simply a human interest story with raw photos and strong poems. The visceral nature of the work speaks of the real, the human – the true and flesh-colored/multicolored experiences of one particular person, her family, her people, her nation..." from this lovely review by Joseph Anthony Rulli

I got to do a Q&A with the actor Rob Morgan and the writer Virgil Williams of the incredible new film . The story takes place in Greenville, Mississippi, during WWII. It's an extraordinary piece of work that is potentially a new classic, by director Dee Rees. Out November 17!!!

Set in the rural American South during World War II, Dee Rees' Mudbound is an epic story of two families pitted against one another by a ruthless social hier...

Halea's story is out in the world! It was an honor to work with the Browns and in Mississippi. Hope to get back down there sometime soon... I always enjoy seeing coverage on the Delta Chinese population. Often overlooked.

Chinese immigrants came to the Mississippi Delta as agricultural laborers. Many moved on to become grocers in African-American neighborhoods. Some stores remain, but many folks have moved on and away.

Today, Valentine's Day, seems to be turning out to be a day to honor people that have passed (like Billy Smiley Sr.). So I decided to post this interview GISH Collective's Jakob Layman and Phyllis Dooney shot 5 years ago of Gus Johnson in Greenville, MS who passed away at age 80 earlier this year. Gus ends this interview beautifully when he says, "A pessimist is not going to find anything." Greenville, Mississippi Greenville Arts Council Jakob N. Layman

This is an informal video of Gus Johnson, owner of Jim's Cafe in Greenville, MS, who passed away at age 80 earlier this year. We––GISH Collective's…
