Jack’s role as production manager included coordinating the physical aspects of a performance for the musicians, such as hiring and organizing the crew, lights, catering, security, and more for each and every show on a tour, and then ensuring that everyone followed through on their roles. When musicians weren’t touring on the road, Jack would do similar work for his local shows and events. Production managers were, and are, integral to the music scene here in Austin — without them, we couldn’t have any live music!

Jack Yoder has a solid background in music, coming from a musical family and oozing an undeniable passion for all things music and performance related. But rather than becoming a music-maker himself, Jack’s journey led him to production management, where he supported musicians by facilitating their shows, from huge national tours or one-off gigs. Jack has done production management work for a variety of celebrated musicians, from Julio Iglesias to Frank Sinatra to Austin’s own Willie Nelson! It’s safe to say that Jack is the definition of a cool, old-school Austinite.

Austinites love philanthropy as much as we love our live music, and nothing encapsulates this uniquely “Austin” combination as well as Swan Songs. Swan Songs is an Austin-based nonprofit with a simple and powerful mission: to fulfill musical last wishes. Local musicians come together to perform for people who are nearing the end of their life, putting on an intimate concert in the individual’s home or care facility. (Swan Songs) was founded by singer-songwriter and musician Christine Albert, who found herself stepping into this role of Founder and CEO so that she could give back to her community.

Meyers admits he’s always struck by how much the city changes between visits. Ott has lived in Austin since the 70s, taking a brief hiatus out of the city in the early 2000s. He describes Austin as “the biggest small city in the world,” and explains that Austin is a versatile, dynamic, supportive community where creators and enthusiasts can come together to make and enjoy music and art. This sort of collaboration between creatives and their supporters is at the foundation of Black Fret’s mission.

This episode, “Love Your Local Music: Featuring Matt Ott of Black Fret | Vibe Austin S01 E02 introduces Matt Ott, Vice Chairman & Co-Founder | Executive Director, Black Fret Austin.

We hail Austin as The Live Music Capital of the World, and the Black Fret Organization couldn’t have sprouted in a better place. Black Fret’s mission is simple: to support the creation and performance of music. But behind its simplicity lies great significance. The music industry, always a hard environment for any artist to make it, is only becoming more challenging. Yet the depth and breadth of incredible music being made in many of our communities is better than ever.

Quist shares a message to newer Austin residents: “Hopefully you’re coming here because you love something about the culture, and you can support [that culture] by spending money.” Buying local, whether that’s making purchases at local Austin businesses or buying tickets to local Austin musician’s shows, will help support this city and keep the culture alive for years to come.

Some of the less savory aspects of Austin’s “vibe” include the heat, which is upwards of 100 degrees for most of the summer months, and the traffic, which has undoubtedly gotten worse since more people have moved to the city. But, Dillard, Strüb, and Quist all agree — you get used to both. Acclimating to the heat and the traffic is just a matter of time, and you learn how to live with it. Each show will begin with a love song called “Deep is Love” by Band of Heathens. As a city that’s held the reputation of “Live Music Capital of the World” for a long time, it only felt appropriate to have a musical guest to kick off season one, and who better than the Austin-based singer-songwriter behind this theme song, Gordy Quist!

People in Austin genuinely like indulging in local art, which is as crucial to the creative community as the artists themselves. Of course, as Austin becomes more popular and the cost of living rises, there will be a fight to preserve this type of artistic community, since musicians in the past have been able to live a creative lifestyle largely due to the low rent and prices compared to other cities. Do you agree?
