The character of Cody in CAPTAGON is based upon Gabrielle Losoncy. I only write tenderly about my friends. All the baddies are made-up, and I have zero-time for autofiction or “transgression” (ie. p**s weak conformity). My latest book, a collaboration with Maggie Dunlap, is published next month.
“Following her from room to room she seems to want to touch and know everything. His books, marked with post-it notes and heavily highlighted: Cartels of the Sun / My Struggle with Drugs and Thugs / Fragile States Index / Military Operations in Urban Terrain / Panther Infiltrators / International Business Machine / Revolutionary Perfection in this World / Small Boy Units: An Illustrated Guide / Playboys of Barbarism / Presumed Authors of Kidnappings / The Complete Dylann Roof / Video Poems Foreshadowing Days of Disaster / Capgras Syndrome Explained / Medical Home Gymnastics / Sharp Swords Drawn Against the Revilers / Slags to Bi***es. “Wait a minute!”, Cody reaches out and flicks through the glossy colour pages shaking her head but laughing all the same. “It’s an academic work”, he protests. Later he gifts her a tape cassette marked “Music For You, Love Billy X”. He shows her hand-drawn maps of trailer parks, apartment complexes, forest trails. A card folder of clipped newspaper advertisements including a set for a local “European-style” beauty parlour, circles drawn around the faces of the models, other cuts and tears, gougings, annotations and scrawl in red ink. Dim little Kodak children crumbling. The drive down to hell is smooth. He wants her to know everything.”
