IGrow Girl At iGrow Girl, we lead girls & women to understand & pursue whole health in every aspect of life

Karen Howard Lee is a communicator, speaker, facilitator, business owner, and author of the book It’s Good For A Girl To Know Who She Is. Karen’s book and her social enterprise company, iGrow Girl, were born out of her passion as a mom and girl advocate to help healthy girls grow into healthy women. Her mission is to empower girls and women through self-discovery, self-definition and a life-long p

ursuit of physical, emotional, and relational health and well-being. Karen’s mantra: “It’s easier to raise a healthy girl than to repair a broken woman.”

Karen is an experienced author, presenter and speaker on girl empowerment and mother/daughter relationship building. She regularly speaks at churches, retreats, author events, and community functions.

Before moving to Texas and starting iGrow Girl in 2017, Karen’s popular Mother/Daughter programs were in high demand in Washington state and Southern California where hundreds of moms and their tween girls attended her, “Just Who Do You Think You Are?” workshop series. Her book and workshops continue to gain popularity as the movement for female empowerment grows.

Karen describes herself as happy, friendly, and intentional--doing everything with purpose. Her warm and inviting energy are key ingredients of her gift of connection. As a mom who has raised two adult daughters (and was once a tween girl herself) Karen uses relatable mother/daughter experiences and storytelling to connect with an audience. Fresh, positive, and always uplifting, her message to “be who you are, and be the best you” is embraced by the girls and women she speaks to.

Karen’s vision for iGrow Girl is to be the center of a far-reaching community where girls are empowered and given the tools to discover who they are, be the best they can be, and become inspired to pursue a life of health and wellness inside and out!

Teacher: Okay, kids, here's a question. If I wear a really short skirt and a shirt with a plunging neckline, what does that say about me?

Me: Yikes!

A sunny state of mind is essential to mental and emotional wellbeing and can begin with a complaint cleanse 🚿. Consider the list of complaints we make during a day—about the weather, the long line at the coffee shop or the slow speed of the internet. Each complaint can create feelings of frustration and ingratitude that build up over time clouding our perspective and weighing us down.

Our words have power and can make a positive or negative impact on us, our environment and on the people around us. Let’s be intentional about nixing the negativity with a complaint cleanse. Try to avoid complaining for a certain amount of time. But don’t stop there. Remember the phrase from back in the day, “turn that frown upside down?” Apply that principle by turning a complaining thought into one of gratitude. We’ll not only feel better overall, but those negative feelings will start to be crowded out by positive thoughts of thankfulness. Think about it, apply it and share it with someone you care for. Bubble baths for brains is a new thought for us, but we like the idea of it.

What’s even better is that this luxury is affordable, available, and easy to do for anyone who can include physical movement in their daily routine. It’s true! Researchers say that when we work out, we give our brain a neurochemical bubble bath!

Physical exercise, even just a ten minute walk, is a simple way to improve health and offers a big return on the investment. A short walk offers the benefits of taking in our surroundings, breathing in fresh air and improving our physical fitness. And to top it off, the exercise literally builds brand new brain cells.

Treating ourselves to a regular brain bubble bath can help protect against Alzheimer’s and dementia. Short, simple workouts also increase mood boosters like dopamine, serotonin and noradrenaline which can decrease stress and improve focus for hours. This is all good stuff that makes our brains feel clean and fresh. But don’t take our word for it—try it by yourself, with the family or someone you care for.

It’s not too late for us to make a clean start to 2022. Consider making a lifestyle change by practicing “clean eating.”

“Clean” food isn’t food that has passed the 5 second rule—and just to be clear, dirt and germs don’t know how to count to 5, so they latch on to dropped food as soon as it hits the ground. You might want to think twice before eating that! Clean foods are whole foods that haven’t been processed, refined or had ingredients added to them. Included on the list are fruits, veggies, beans, nuts, seeds, whole grains, meat, fish and eggs.

Choosing whole foods over fast and other processed foods is a great way to increase nutrients, antioxidants, and fiber in our bodies and boost health benefits. Some clean eaters may also exclude gluten or dairy items while increasing raw fruits and veggies.

Today is a good day to make a clean start and practice a more thoughtful way of eating. Try making delicious whole food dishes on your own, with the family or with someone you care for. Let’s spread the health! iGrow Girl & Contagious Health 🫐🥕🍳

What about you? Are you looking forward to new energy, new opportunities, new experiences, new perspectives, and new (you fill in the blank)? Let’s move forward to the next adventure and better days. Leave all negativity behind. Let’s spread the health! iGrow Girl & Contagious Health 🏃🏾‍♀️🎊☀️

iGrow Girl and Contagious Health hope that these December Merry days will bring healthy holidays to each of us. However, we know that we’ll have to be intentional about maintaining our emotional wellness.

Here are a few things to remember when our days become hectic with holiday shopping, cooking, and preparing for parties, dinners and other festive events. 1. Focus on what really matters. Long lines at the store and unexpected delays can be frustrating and stressful. When those things start to negatively affect our mood, it’s important to take a deep breath and turn our thoughts to more meaningful things that are important to us. 2. Expect imperfection. It’s okay if things don’t go exactly as planned. Nothing and no one is perfect. 3. Practice relaxation techniques. Scheduling times for prayer, meditation, a massage or to just enjoy a moment of peace can help us recalibrate and manage stress.

Caring for our own emotional and mental health is a gift we give ourselves, but those around us benefit as well. Give these mental health tips a try and share them with someone you care for. Let’s spread the health! iGrow Girl and Contagious Health 🙏🏾🎄💆🏾‍♀️

Let’s deck the halls with game balls and fun physical activities that keep us moving. This holiday season, consider giving the gift of a group class or private lesson that will serve up invigorating physical fitness as well as a good dose of joy. With such a wide range of choices available, we can find a good fit for ourselves, families and friends. Here are a few ideas: yoga, pilates, tai-chi, karate, kick-boxing, swimming, rock climbing, dancing, skiing, snowboarding, and pickleball. Giving holiday cheer in a class can be a thoughtful and creative gift from the heart, for the heart. Let’s spread the health. iGrow Girl and Contagious Health 🏂🧘🏾‍♀️🧗🏾‍♀️

December is here—the month when many of us experience the joy of giving! iGrow Girl and Contagious Health are happy to share ideas each week in December on healthful gifts we can give this holiday season.

During this time of year, we will likely find ourselves giving and receiving a variety of sweet treats and comfort foods. Tidings of comfort and yummm don’t have to be laden with processed sugar, and high in empty calories and trans fats.

With a little effort, we can find recipes that include great tasty alternative ingredients as substitutes for the ingredients that are less healthful, while keeping the delish in the dish. Not into cooking, yourself? No problem. The number of highly-rated health conscious restaurants and bakeries have grown exponentially in recent years. Many of them offer a variety of healthful satisfying treats or comfort foods. A lot of menus include vegan, gluten free, and dairy free options. Let’s treat ourselves and our loved ones to food that tastes good and is good for us. Spread the health! iGrow Girl and Contagious Health 🎄🌰🥘

As November comes to a close, let’s top off our month long celebration of gratitude and thanksgiving! iGrow Girl and Contagious Health are thankful for lifelong learning.

During the holiday season and beyond, let’s show gratitude for opportunities to learn new things. When we have a healthy relationship with learning, we look for ways to expand our knowledge and welcome different experiences.

Try a little brainteaser: How many words can be made from the word “learner?” 33; 45; 55

We live in a world full of interesting things, extraordinary people, natural wonders, and exciting experiences. At the end of the day, make a list of something you learned, a new experience you had, or a new thought you explored. Try making a personal or family goal to learn at least one new thing everyday. Keep a learning journal and you’ll be surprised to see how much you and your family have grown in a week, a month, a year!

Lifelong learners make great lifelong sharers. Share your newly discovered gems with the people you care for and encourage them to embrace a healthy relationship with learning. (Brainteaser answer: according to wordmaker.info, fifty-five words can be made out of the word “learner.”) Spread the health! iGrow Girl and Contagious Health📚💁🏾‍♀️🌻

It’s week 3 and we’re still celebrating November—a month of gratitude and thanksgiving! This week, iGrow Girl and Contagious Health are thankful for the many different kinds of music that move and soothe us.

Along with joy and festivities, the holiday season can bring anxiety, stress, and other negative effects on our mental and emotional health. Music therapy is one way to boost mental wellness.

No matter what kind of music we enjoy, it can be healthful to immerse ourselves in the surround sound of uplifting, calming or energizing music. We are thankful that there are tons of genres and tunes to choose from—which makes it easy to find what we need when we need it.

Try a little trivia: How many music genres exist worldwide? 172; 1300; 3037

Turn up the health promoting music while you do other stress busting activities like yoga, painting, reading, etc. Sing, hum and move with gratitude and thanksgiving, and share with family and friends. (Trivia answer: A 2017 Askwonder.com article listed 1300 worldwide music genres which included Swedish rap!) Spread the health! iGrow Girl and Contagious Health 🎶🎸💞

iGrow Girl and Contagious Health are happy to have you along as we continue celebrating November—a month of gratitude and thanksgiving!

It’s week 2, and we’re thankful for fall festivities and the chance to enjoy fresh air, family, friends, fun fitness games and activities. Yep. That’s a lot of Fs and they’re all good!

Celebrating the holidays in a mild climate? Then, consider adding an outdoor fun fitness activity before or after dinner. Be bold and enjoy doing two different fun fitness activities—one before the meal and one after!

Play a game of touch football, soccer or kickball before dinner and go for a family/friend brisk walk after dinner. Try a little trivia: The first-ever Thanksgiving Day football game was played between Yale and Princeton. What year was it—1876, 1902, or 1749?

For those of us enjoying the holiday in colder climates, a family line dance in the living room is a fun idea. Whatever we choose to do, let’s do it with gratitude and encourage our friends and family to do the same. (Trivia answer: The year was 1876.) Hello November!! iGrow Girl and Contagious Health invite you to join us as we celebrate November—a month of gratitude and thanksgiving!

This week, we’re thankful for the long list of delicious natural healthy foods that not only nourish us, but also make us do the yummy dance when we’re eating them.

If you’re looking to do something new and unexpected, consider serving seafood for Thanksgiving. Maybe a flavorful salmon filet. Believe it or not, seafood was served at the first Thanksgiving feast. Try a little trivia - What seafood was served at the first Thanksgiving feast?

During the season, balance your meals with a salad or side like sweet potatoes or these lovely leafy greens: kale, spinach, Swiss chard, beet greens, and collard greens. Get creative with herbs and spices to give them a kick.

Want a delish dessert? Include any of the super berries: acai berries, blueberries, raspberries, tart cherries, cranberries, and goji berries. Top them off with a little dark chocolate.

Before we get busy planning for the holidays and rushing here and there, it would be a good idea to make a list of the fresh healthful foods that make us smile. Then, be intentional about including them in our festive holiday meals. Eating makes us happy, so let’s savor every bite. (Trivia answer: Lobster, oysters, cod, bass and maybe eel) Spread the health! iGrow Girl and Contagious Health🙌🏾💁🏾‍♀️🍲

Our Story

iGrow Girl is a social enterprise company with a mission to empower girls. We encourage tween girls to discover who they are and be the best they can be by empowering them and their families with the tools to practice self-care, health and wellness inside and out (physical, relational, emotional and mental).

Our girl-centered workbook, workshops, events and programs encompass the three Fs: We are fresh, fun and physical. OK, so physical doesn’t begin with an f, but go with us on this one!

In all that we do, iGrow Girl brings fresh ideas. We teach practical tools and share valuable resources that girls and their families can embrace or personalize to make their own.

We always include elements of fun because having fun is important to emotional, mental and relational health. In addition to bringing girls joy, it broadens our community because, let's face it, who doesn’t like to have fun?
