Join us in celebrating this year’s DeWitty/Overton Freedom Award, presented by the Austin NAACP — an event dedicated to honoring the legacies of civil rights leaders Arthur B. DeWitty and Volma Overton, Sr.

I’m Anita C Roberts, Executive Director of Made Media Group aka Black Austin and Editor-in-Chief of the Austin Black Business Journal & Community News Magazine, and I’m honored to be part of this powerful organization that uplifts those who continue the work of justice, equity, and empowerment in our community.

🌟 About the Award:
The DeWitty/Overton Freedom Award, established in 1966, celebrates individuals who make significant contributions to civil rights, civic engagement, and public policy. It is presented during the Austin NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet, the organization’s annual fundraiser supporting its mission to achieve equity, eliminate discrimination, and strengthen the social and economic well-being of Black communities and all people of color.

A tearful Devonta Smith sat on the field of the Superdome following a 40-36 loss to Lutcher in the LHSAA Class 3A State Championship (12/10/2016) his senior year of high school. Fast forward, and Smith went on to achieve greatness: 2 National Championships at Alabama, the Heisman Trophy, and now, a Super Bowl Champion with the Philadelphia Eagles, even scoring a touchdown in the big game. 🙌
He just returned to the Superdome, where he faced heartbreak, and walked away a champion. This is a story of . Dreams do come true. Failure is temporary. Never give up. God has a plan, trust it.
