Mónica del Arenal, Mexican Architect
Mónica del Arenal brings renewed attention to the powerful visual legacy of Mariana Yampolski at the UT School of Architecture, inviting a new generation to experience photography that captures the depth of place, people, and cultural identity.
It was an honor and a great pleasure to speak with Mónica del Arenal regarding her exhibition, *Home and Substance in Rural Mexico*, which features the photography of Mariana Yampolsky (1925 Chicago – 2002 Mexico) at UT School of Architecture.
Her commentary elucidates the content of each photograph, drawing upon a profound historical knowledge of Mexican culinary traditions and housing construction in rural Mexico.
Mónica del Arenal explains that Mariana Yampolsky’s photographic gaze serves as an exemplar of respect and keen observation—an approach that enabled an outsider to become an integral part of Mexico.
Mónica del Arenal has been invited as a curator for the exhibition at Barcelona World Capital of Architecture 2026 (UNESCO-UIA)— *Women's Covered Paths Between Latin America and Europe*—which will take place next June 2026.
THE EXHIBITION IS ON VIEW IN THE NORTH LOBBY OF GOLDSMITH HALL AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS UNTIL April 30th. DON'T MISS IT.!
