Episode 7: Encrypted History
(Links in comments)

The Indus Valley Civilization and the Minoan Civilization were both highly advanced, highly influential nations of the ancient world, yet our knowledge of them is obscured by our inability to decipher their writing systems (Indus Valley Script and Linear A). Hear Lance Fever Myers, William Gold, and L.B. Deyo struggle to draw deep knowledge from limited archaeological evidence. They will fail and so, dear listener will you!

L.B.: And the gods decide to kill Gilgamesh and Enkidu to punish them. Enkidu dies. Gilgamesh in his grief and rage determines to become immortal.

He learns about the great flood that we've been talking about, the one from the Bible. He fails a test to become immortal and realizes that he is doomed to die. He returns to Uruk.

He is wise and accepting of his mortality, and he lives out his days as a just king. So that's the epic of Gilgamesh.

Lance Fever: It sounds like an ancient Marvel movie. Doesn't it?

L.B.: I was going to say! There's something so superhero like about Gilgamesh and his buddy Enkidu. And even the fact that there are gods running around is very Marvel-like.

Lance Fever: Right. Yes. Yes.

So I guess we've always enjoyed that kind of over-the-top fantastical storytelling.

L.B.: Yes. It seems that way. I mean, let's face it, it beats reading about someone planting barley seeds and then waiting six months and then going and harvesting the barley.

Lance Fever: You're telling me there's no ancient My Dinner with Andre.

L.B.: I don't think so. I don't think so. They like their entertainment a little more pulp.

Lance Myers And it starts to break down to a point where you get this sort of like -- you have to approach it. It's sort of like this zen-like blank mindedness of like, it's just information. And what the hell is that? How does that, you know, like we're not equipped to think in those terms, I don't think.

L.B.: Well, it's not easy. It's not easy to think of the world as being made of information.

Lance: Right.

L.B.: But that idea from what I read is being taken more and more seriously in the physics community that the universe at least can be interpreted or understood as being made of information. And more specifically, the all-important second law of thermodynamics. The idea of entropy is best understood in terms not of heat or even order and disorder, but in terms of information, where the information in a system increases with its entropy.

Lance: The information in a system increases with its entropy.

L.B.: Yes.

Lance: Let me tell you something. Entropy is not something I understand very well.
