SYNTHS AND SOCKHOPS
1950s Horror Attacks the 1980s

For a generation of horror fans, summer meant staying up too late with friends, discovering creature features, drive-in classics, and anything weird enough to leave a lasting impression.

This summer, Goremet Cinema Gang and The Night Owl Podcast invite you to revisit that feeling with Synths and Sockhops: 1950s Horror Attacks the 1980s—a celebration of three films that took the monsters, paranoia, and Americana of 1950s horror and transformed them into something bigger, stranger, and uniquely 80s.

From a haunted 1958 Plymouth Fury to alien parasites and a flesh-devouring blob, these films capture a decade when horror was having fun—pushing practical effects to new heights, embracing wild concepts, and delivering the kind of unforgettable movie moments that are best experienced with a crowd.

Each film will be presented in stunning 4K at Oddwood Brewing. Every screening will also feature a unique 13x19 event poster created exclusively for the series by local artist Jose Ramirez, with a signed print raffled off to a lucky ticket holder in attendance.

So grab a beer, bring a friend, and join us for three summer nights celebrating the movies that kept us up late, blew our minds, and made us lifelong horror fans.

JUNE 8 — CHRISTINE
JULY 13 — NIGHT OF THE CREEPS
AUGUST 10 — THE BLOB (1988)

Going down at Oddwood Brewing • Austin, Texas

SHE’S A KILLER.

Our summer horror series Synths and Sockhops: 1950s Horror Attacks the 1980s begins June 8th with one of the greatest collaborations in horror history — John Carpenter adapting Stephen King’s CHRISTINE.

More than just a killer car movie, CHRISTINE perfectly embodies the spirit of this series: 1980s filmmakers channeling the style, nostalgia, rebellion, and paranoia of 1950s America through a darker and more cynical lens. Hot rods, sock hops, rock & roll, teenage angst… twisted into something obsessive and deadly.

Presented in 4K at Oddwood Brewing.

We also wanted these nights to feel like more than just screenings, so each film in the series will feature something unique — post-film discussions, audience Q&As, analysis, special surprises, and original artwork created exclusively for the event by a local artist.

For CHRISTINE, a limited original event poster is being designed right now, and one free print will be raffled off to ticket holders in attendance after the film.

Tickets:

Night Owls… we officially made the ballot for Austin Chronicle’s Best Of Austin in TWO categories:

Best Podcast
Best Radio/Podcast Host

This means more to me than I can really put into words. Best Of Austin has been part of this city’s culture for decades — a guide to the people, places, artists, and voices that make Austin what it is.

Winning these awards has helped give The Night Owl credibility and visibility in ways that genuinely impact the show. It helps us continue to grow, helps preserve the work we do, and even helps open doors to historic locations and stories that might otherwise never trust an independent team to investigate.

A 6th win for Best Podcast would honestly be incredible.

If you’d like to support us, we’d be deeply grateful for your vote 🖤

Voting runs May 7–18 and closes Monday, May 18 at 11:59pm. One person, one vote.

🚨NEW EPISODE 🚨
Dropping Monday, April 27th at midnight (CST)

THE HAUNTED OLD ROCK STORE - PART I

For decades, there’s been a place in Austin that people quietly point to when the conversation turns to the most haunted locations in the city.

Not just a passing rumor… but something that’s followed the building through generations—through different owners, different businesses… and the many lives that have passed through its doors.

Most people people today remember it most as the Austin Pizza Garden—where stories of unexplained voices, shadowy figures, and something lingering in the building became part of its identity. The kind of place spoken about in the same breath as Austin’s most infamous hauntings.

But today, that same building lives on in a new form.

A kava bar in Oak Hill—SquareRut Kava Bar to be exact —operating inside what’s known historically as the Old Rock Store of Oak Hill… a structure that’s stood here for well over a century.

And the stories… they never really died.

Now, for the first time, The Night Owl is stepping inside this historic landmark to investigate.

In this episode, we’ll take you on a journey through time—speaking with the current staff working within these walls today… while also uncovering voices and experiences from those who came long before them.

Because whatever people were experiencing here decades ago…hasn’t stopped.
