From our new SongOffice blog on Tumblr...

Melina Twyman was 19 years old when she decided to pursue a music career after The Lennon Bus made a stop in San Antonio,Texas and gave her an opportunity to professionally film, produce, and record a music video for her original song “Runaway” in March of 2013. The experience left a lasting impression and inspired her to move to Austin, Texas where she continued to develop her songwriting skills in the city’s open mic scene.

In January of 2014 she released the single “Put Down The Bottle” on YouTube which quickly attracted a following. The two albums she released on iTunes and Spotify began to generate sales after her songs were featured on Pandora Radio. Although she initially started to generate a buzz in the Texas indie folk scene she felt restricted by the genre and increasingly uncomfortable with the squeaky clean image that she felt pressured to maintain for her career.

She took a break from everything in 2015 and for three months took up a job waitressing to save money for a move to California. Even though she felt emotionally drained and hadn’t performed for months she couldn’t help but wonder if her fans would accept the underground hip-hop sound that inspired her to write to music in the first place as a teenager in Houston, Texas. Unable to leave music behind for good; she quietly recorded and released the single “Gold“ as Bateau and officially retired her old stage name Melina Evalyn on Facebook.

The risk payed off and “Gold” quickly won over her fans and drew in the interest of Austin Rapper/producer HADES, who then signed her to his Black Market Pluto after they collaborated together on the song “Downtown (Houston)”

Listening to the new tracks it’s easy to see that Melina’s vocals grew more ambitious as she started to pen more autobiographical lyrics and incorporated a more mature sound. Her voice hovers with ease over the Deep bass and dark atmospheric tones that HADES has brought to the table on both “Downtown (Houston)” and her latest release “Airplane.” on which she effortlessly delivers the lines “and I have never been one to fall apart…/ and I got all my success to back it” on the hook.

Bateau’s debut album is currently in production and is expected to release in September of this year.

PInATA PROTEST is a uniquely awesome band out of San Antonio, Texas. The band mixes punk rock with the tex-mex sounds of norteño, cumbia, and conjunto. Check out this rad episode of NPR's Alt.Latino for an inside look of the bands influences and how they came to form one of the most revolutionary punk bands of our generation!

Austin based garage punk band ¿Qué Pasa? has been quickly winning the hearts of people across the country with their debut album BIG MISTAKE.

For a band that is less then a year old they sure have accomplished a lot.

Forming in late 2014 the trio which features members of Dikes of Holland and Church Shoes quickly ran off to record a demo at East Side Tone after local producer Erin Martinez was impressed by their show at Street-Legal Guitars which bassist Ali Copeland helped establish earlier that year.

What was originally only intended to be just a few songs managed to turn into a full length album in less then a few days. They even managed to squeeze in enough time to feature Ryan Sambol of The Strange Boys (official) on a track.

The album then quickly got the attention of up and coming San Antonio based record label Yippee Ki Yay Records who signed the band and released it on cassette, and iTunes. The record then got a lot of love from blogs and radio stations like Ovrld The Deli Magazine, KUTX Austin and Sonic Masala.

Somehow, before embarking on a 19 day tour through the mid-west and the south they also managed to release 2 music videos and wasted no time adding another one just a few days after they returned!

Clearly, Liz Burrito, Ali Copeland and Gabriel Pastura don't like to waste any time and are a band to watch.

The album is available for purchase or streaming via Spotify and Bandcamp along with a physical release on cassette from Yippee Ki Yay Records website.

Eliza Rickman has joined the SongOffice family! You may have seen her while she was on tour with Welcome to Night Vale last year whom she will tour with again this fall in support of her upcoming album.

After earning a degree in orchestration from Azusa Pacific University Eliza began to focus more on her music and released the e.p. Gild The Lily which was wildly successful after her music video for the song "Cinnamon Bone" landed her a spot at the SXSW music festival in Austin TX in 2011.

She first gained national attention when the song "Pretty Little Head" off of her debut album O' You Sinners was featured on NPR Music's Song of The Day.

O' You Sinners was produced with Mark Greenberg who was known for his work with Wilco and Andrew Bird. Together they developed a larger sound that put Eliza's vocals at the forefront while also surrounding them by layers of toy piano, strings and stomps.

No stranger to travel, Eliza then packed up her toy piano and began a seemingly never ending tour in support of the album that has taken her all over the U.S. and Europe.

In 2014 she was invited to participate in a project with Jason Webley who was working on an album called Margaret. Margaret was a concept album that began with the discovery of late poet Margaret Thatcher's scrapbook which was rescued from a dumpster in L.A. by a friend. Jason was deeply moved by her work and began a quest to that him took him all way out to a small town in Washington state where he later organized an event in her honor.

Eliza then announced that she would be working alongside Jason on a new album in 2015.

One of the greatest things about Austin, TX is that we have non profits like Health Alliance for Austin Musicians and the The SIMS Foundation who help musicians in our area obtain insurance and the care they need.

In Austin, the music industry generates almost $2 billion a year for the local economy, but some musicians say they’re lucky if they leave a gig with $5 in

Song Office was created by and for musicians in Austin, TX who are all to familiar with the struggles our community faces as our city continues to grow. We founded our company with one simple goal; create a new source of income for musicians with a focus on Austin artists.

This week Cheer Up Charlies, The Mohawk Austin, Red 7 and Holy Mountain all expressed deep concern over the future of their businesses as they face huge rent increases, obtrusive development and additional regulations on sound.

Holy Mountain has announced that they will be closing their doors on October 1st, and Cheer Up Charlies has expressed the idea of not renewing their lease in 2019. The future looks uncertain for almost half of Red Rivers clubs who's contributions to city are great in terms of economic growth, culture, and increasing national viability.

Texas Monthly Magazine raises the question of the live music community surviving without a Red River club district.

The bigger question we should all be asking this; what is the economic impact the city could face if it continues to push the industry that put it on the map out?

As development threatens two mainstays of Austin’s Red River Cultural District, it’s time to start considering the unthinkable: What would Austin’s live music scene look like without Red River?
