FPM00017: Prairie Clamor - True Songs [2022]

After the lengthy, all-over-the-place Spilling Light, I decided that the next Prairie Clamor album needed to be focused and concise: thirty-something minutes, with better-crafted songs and heightened production values. It took twice as long to write and record as Spilling Light, but I think we achieved our goals on True Songs.

And with those goals (I think) achieved, what could be next for Prairie Clamor? Well, all I can say is you’d best stay tuned, buckle up, and GET HYPE–because we haven’t stopped raising the bar. More info in due time…

…And like that, we’re all caught up on our Weekly FPM Release Roundup! Looking forward to sharing more of the finest experimental pop et al. with you all soon!

FPMK00016: Will Sings Songs - What’s a Rutabaga?? [2021]

Our sole release of 2021 was my first album of kids music! Most of these songs were written around the same time as Prairie Clamor’s Spilling Light, but the bulk of the recording happened in spring and summer of 2021 Above the Laundromat and at The House by the Sinkhole. Writing and recording kids songs is PURE FUN, and some of the tunes on this record are among my favorites that I’ve written, especially “All The Blue in the World.” I’m currently knee-deep in writing my next kids album, which is shaping up to be even more outrageous than this one!

FPM00014: Castle Garrison - Against The Basilisk [2020]

This is one wild ride of a record. From electro-pop bangers like “All Of The Lightbulbs” to electro-prog opuses like “Karma Eradicator 2: The Tulpa And The Egregore,” Castle Garrison brings the electro-goods from start to finish. A true auteur, Castle Garrison’s Garrison Meyer programmed the entire album using free and open-source VSTs.

Castle Garrison has many projects in the works, including an ambitious follow-up to ATB. Rumor also has it that Castle Garrison and Prairie Clamor have been working on a collaborative album for, like, the last three years. But considering the rate that they've been working on it (or not working on it), who knows when they'll get their act together to finish that thing! Like I said though, that's just a rumor.

FPM00013: Monk Ruckus - True Dabbler [2019]

Mapleview Lounge frontman Taylor Sharp returned with a vengeance in 2019 with True Dabbler, a consciousness-expanding document of experimental pop. Taylor put it best himself: “True Dabbler is 50 minutes of pop that will surely unite baby boomers and millennials.”

Sharp is FPM’s true wordsmith. Here are some of my favorite lyrics from True Dabbler:

“leaping across church luncheons to elude gross unlikability”
“typershark melancholy burrow”
“mental barriers to be broken if you sell your soul to soulfulness”
“I have a pet tarantula named pat”

After a break from our weekly FPM Release Roundup, it's time to get back to it! Starting with FPM00012: Jacob Whalen - Exposure Length [2019]

This was the first FPM album to be recorded (mostly) above the Quick Wash laundromat in Saint Paul, Minnesota. It’s neofolky as all get out. Heck, it even has lyrics in Italian and Latin. A couple of the tracks on here were engineered by Jake’s brother Josh, and feature members of Josh’s fabtastic band .

According to the liner notes, the humanatone¹ was NOT used as part of the instrumentation of this record. Sorry, everybody!

FPM00011 - Prairie Clamor - Next 7 Exits [2018]

This album was written and recorded during the same period as my naturalist internship at the fabulous Jay C. Hormel Nature Center in Austin, MN. I clocked a heckuva lot of hours there, which rubbed off on this album. The JCHNC is where I started making up the song Angelica, it’s where we filmed the music video for Controlled Burn, and in the interpretive center is where I painstakingly burned one hundred mini CDRs for the album’s physical release. Thanks to Luke, Maria, Julie, Andie, Mike, Jill, Cristina, and the whole extended JCHNC family for putting up with me that year! And all these years!
