My name is Genevieve Marston. Everyone in Sonoma County still calls me Evie, the way my dad did when I was four and learning to identify a Cabernet leaf from a Merlot leaf in the south block before I could ride a bike.

Catherine is my dad's trust attorney. She is seventy-six now, half-blind in one eye, and the sharpest legal mind I have ever met. I am going to tell you how I found out, but I want to set the scene properly, because the part that broke me was not the money. The money I would have given him. The money was always going to be ours; Marston Estate generates enough that a missing $48,000 a month is, frankly, the kind of thing a busy vintner does not catch in real time if her own husband is the one running the books on the direct-to-consumer wine-club side.
The part that broke me was the cottage in Calistoga.
It was a Tuesday in late September, harvest, the busiest week of our year. Don Miguel's crew was pulling Cabernet off the east slope at five in the morning in the cold, headlamps moving through the rows like slow fireflies. I was at the crush pad by 5:40 with a clipboard and a thermos of coffee. Garrett was supposedly on his way back from Napa — he'd told me Sunday night he had to meet a glass supplier in Yountville.
At 7:11 a.m. my phone buzzed. It was a text from a number I didn't know, a 707 area code.

I am Mrs. Marston. I kept my father's name when I married. There is, to my knowledge, no Mrs. Cole.
I stood there in the predawn cold, between rows of vines my great-grandfather planted, and I watched my own breath fog the screen. Don Miguel passed behind me carrying a half-lug of Cabernet on his shoulder, glanced at my face, set the lug down without breaking stride, and asked, in Spanish, if I was alright. *Estás bien, mija?*
I smiled at him and said *sí, sí, Don Miguel*, and I put my phone in my back pocket and I worked harvest for the next twelve hours like a woman who was not dying inside.
It is the moment I am proudest of and least proud of, all at once. Proudest because I did not break the rhythm of a hundred-and-one-year-old family business. Least proud because the man I had married had spent fourteen months turning that rhythm into the mortgage payment on another woman's nursery.
I drove home at 7:40 p.m. with my hands at ten and two on the wheel of my dad's old Tacoma.
Garrett was already there. He had grilled chicken. He had opened a bottle of our 2019 Estate Cab. He had set out the good plates, the ones with the small gold rim that had been my grandmother's.

I closed the door behind me. I turned on the green-shaded desk lamp.
I opened Garrett's laptop. He had never given me the password. He didn't need to. My father had taught me one thing about men, very early — when I was maybe nine, asking why my mother had left. By 4:30 a.m. I had screenshots of fourteen months of wire transfers from a sham consulting LLC registered in Napa — Stonehill Consulting LLC, sole officer Garrett T. Cole — to a mortgage account on a 1947 cottage at 1147 Foothill Boulevard in Calistoga. I had a photograph, sent from Tessa Albright, a sommelier at a Napa resort, twenty-eight years old, of a twelve-week sonogram. His plan, I realized, was to put a piece of paper in front of me at the office of the one attorney I trusted in the world, frame it as routine, and have me sign over half of my father's life's work to a man who was already moving paint samples into another woman's nursery.
I closed the laptop. I went into the kitchen. I poured myself a glass of water from the tap. I stood at the window of the house my great-grandfather built and I watched the eastern sky turn the color of the Cabernet that pays for everything we have ever owned.
And I thought, very quietly, *Daddy, what did you put in that envelope.*
I did not cry. The crying came later. That morning, what I felt was something quieter and more useful: the same cold, focused, four-generations-of-Sonoma-vintner clarity my father used to get when he was deciding when, exactly, to call the pick.
