Newark Rod and Gun Club hosted 76 students from eight school districts over Memorial Day weekend for the Finger Lakes Regional Trap Shooting Tournament. At the end of a soggy and challenging five-hour Saturday spent chasing clays in blustery conditions, Red Jacket came away with their fourth-straight Finger Lakes Regional Championship.

“My father saw some of the photos I took and said, ‘That’s it, this is your artistic gift.’ He helped me buy my first professional camera, and I haven’t stopped since,” says Michele Ashlee-Meade, photographer, hairstylist, and humanitarian.

The daughter of an artist, Michele admired her father’s talent for sculpture and painting, but took some time to find her own artistic space, discovering her passion on a trip to Haiti twenty years ago. She says, “I brought a film camera with me and took photos at the farm markets and of the local folks along the way,” the type of photos that would come to characterize Michele’s raw style — candid human life in the ordinary world.

Brian Floramo’s story of illness begins before he could form memories, undergoing his first surgery at just three months old. Born with congenital kidney issues, Brian’s life has always been about specialists and high-stake medical decisions. Brian says, “While most families scheduled playdates and preschool visits, mine scheduled procedures.”

The sun sets over Fairport’s Main Street. The lift bridge has just settled after a group of people on a boat rode under, waving. They probably wish they had docked, recognizing good jazz from a soundstage and the smell of fried dough. Artists display fine art and craftworkers have brought crafts from across the country.

Children clap and cheer their rubber ducks on in a race as they float down the canal. A woman pulls up on bicycle to meet her son and grandson for dinner. Everything is cast in a pink-neon-orange hue. It’s the spirit of the Fairport Canal Days Festival, almost five decades old.
