For SUNY Geneseo senior Natalie Pipes, tennis has been part of her life for as long as she can remember. Now, as a captain of the women’s tennis team and the reigning Empire 8 Player of the Year, she proceeds in her final collegiate season with both individual goals and a larger team objective in mind.

A Victor Senior High School graduate, Pipes has already established herself among the Empire 8’s top players. In 2025, she was named the conference’s Player of the Year after going 8-0 in Empire 8 singles competition and 9-2 overall at first singles. She also earned first-team All-Empire 8 honors in doubles with teammate JoAnn Catalano, posting a 6-2 conference record and 9-2 overall mark. The honor was voted on by the league’s head coaches. The Naples Open Studio Trail (NOST) is a group of artists who invite the public into their studios to share their crafts, demonstrate their creative processes, and foster a greater understanding of the arts. Celebrating its 25th year, NOST’s free, self-guided tour October 3-4 features 19 artists at 12 locations throughout the Canandaigua Lake region, offering opportunities to meet artists, view demonstrations, purchase artwork, and arrange commissions.

Taryn Windheim brings a world of experience to the Midlakes High School classroom. A Canandaigua Academy alum, Windheim has worked in the nonprofit sector, served in government, and experienced two career setbacks before finding what she now considers exactly where she is meant to be.

Spring 2026, that journey led to one of her most significant professional honors: the James Madison Fellowship, awarded by the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation to one educator from each state annually.

Spirits were flying high when the Genesee Valley Rotary Camp (GVRC) convened its 63rd annual Camp Week in Pike, NY, from August 9-15. Since 1963, GVRC has invited children and young adults with disabilities to Camp Sam Wood for a week of adventure and life-changing experiences.

Brian Bartalo, GVRC Camp Director, said, “The reason we exist, first and foremost, is to provide an incredible week of camping, fun, friendship, and love to an amazing group of children who inspire us and teach us about the power of potential.”

This year, GVRC hosted 96 campers from Allegany, Livingston, Steuben, and Wyoming counties and the surrounding areas. Each year the Camp centers on a theme, and for 2026 it was “Up in the Air” focusing on all things that fly, float, and soar.

Whoops - Wrong Tops Ad, Batavia!

A distribution error caused the Tops weekly ad that is valid September 6–12 to be mistakenly sent out to some homes on Friday, August 28.

Family lore has Heather Davis singing at the age of three in her Vermont childhood home, where she says, “there was always some kind of music playing on the stereo or played and sung by my family.” Heather’s mother sang and her two older brothers played in jazz band and orchestra.

Heather played several instruments throughout school, too, but in high school, when Davis auditioned for music festivals, a choir teacher recognized her ability and recommended private lessons.

Since then, Heather has been singing operatic repertoire, a collection of operas selected to suit her mezzo-soprano range, the middle voice of the opera, usually played by the supporting female role with a rich, deep, almost smoky, tone.
