Long before whale sharks cruised the oceans, another gentle giant ruled the seas.

Meet Leedsichthys problematicus — one of the largest fish ever known to have lived. Swimming through the world’s oceans around 165 million years ago during the Jurassic Period, this enormous filter feeder may have reached lengths exceeding 15 meters (50 feet), rivaling some modern whales in size.

Despite its massive appearance, Leedsichthys wasn’t a predator. Instead, it survived by filtering tiny plankton and small marine organisms from the water, much like today’s whale sharks and basking sharks. Its existence proves that giant filter-feeding animals evolved long before the first whales appeared on Earth.

Meet Aegirocassis benmoulae — a 7-foot giant that cruised through Earth's oceans nearly 480 million years ago.

At first glance, it looks like something from a science fiction movie: a long segmented body, strange swimming flaps, and a bizarre head unlike any creature alive today. Yet this prehistoric giant wasn't a fearsome predator.

Instead, it peacefully filtered tiny plankton from the water, much like modern whales and whale sharks. Its specialized feeding structures acted as a giant underwater sieve, allowing it to consume vast amounts of microscopic life drifting through ancient seas.

What makes this creature especially important is that it helps scientists understand the early evolution of arthropods—the group that would eventually give rise to insects, spiders, crabs, and millions of other species that now inhabit our planet.

Discovered in Morocco and dating back approximately 480 million years, Aegirocassis provides a rare glimpse into a world long before dinosaurs existed, when life was experimenting with some of its earliest complex body designs.
