✏️What is editing and does your band really need it ⁉️
A lot of bands don't think about the editing stage of music production. I know that in my naivety, I jumped straight from recording to mixing. There is a stage inbetween there, and that is called editing.
This is probably the most unsexy part of music production, but arguably the most importantone of the most important.
So what is editing? Often times it Although it can be subjective, this is generally what editing consists of:
✅Fixing timing
✅Cutting out unneeded pieces of audio from one or more tracks
✅Vocal comping
✅Vocal tuning (not autotune)
✅Surgical Eq to remove resonances
etc...
Obviously, this isn't a comprehensive list, as each song, band, album is different.
Do you know how commerically produced bands are able to get such tight guitars and drums?
The answer is editing!
Now, I will say that there are plenty of extremely talented musicians out there that are able to achieve a tighreally tight with their playing, but even seasoned professionals can usually benefit from help some mild editing.
Next time you listen to your favorite metalcore or hard rock band, listen to how tight the band is. Originally you might have thought that it came from a mimixing.
, but the secret sauce is in editing.
Quick caveat...editing is no substitute for a great performance. When you record, you want to give it your all, which goes back to the post I made about "practicing practicing to a click track. Go back and read the one with the image that says "Practicing is Borinwg!."
You should go into the studio with the mindset of recording great tracks that practically mix themselves.
Record like there's no editing. Edit like there's no mixing. Mix like there's no mastering.
Changes your mindset, right?
