Michael Leroy Byrd was a lieutenant with the U.S. Capitol Police who became nationally known after fatally shooting Ashli Babbitt, an unarmed Air Force veteran, on January 6.

The U.S. Capitol Police later promoted Byrd to captain, following internal and Biden’s Department of Justice reviews that cleared him of criminal wrongdoing.

Today, Democrats who supported this action are saying Renee Good, who got in a confrontation with ICE before speeding her vehicle in the direction of federal officers, then getting shot, was unjustified.

Letter to the editor

Hello, BTUFF!!! I wanted to bring light to an on going problem in Bakersfield. It has been a long standing issue, however the last 5-10yrs the homeless problem in town has grown substantially. For years many other cities in Ca, and from all of the US have sent us their homeless.

These homeless are promised resources and jobs from our local non-profits, only to get here and receive zero of what is promised. With no money or programs they end up on the streets. A lot of these organizations are funded by the state and are given a lot of money for each homeless person that is registered. I’ve seen these non-profits walking the streets during the middle of the night counting and collecting names of these homeless.

I truly believe it’s a huge money grab. The same issue is seen in a lot of local “sober” homes in town. People from all over the United States are shipped to Bakersfield and promised housing and a rehabilitation program, but are often crammed into an apartment with at least a half dozen other people who were promised the same. With zero help, these people end up stranded in town, back on drugs, wondering our streets.

They have no idea who the “director” of the program is or who they even spoke to on the phone prior to their trip. They are given free transportation and a promise. Someone has to be profiting off of this. Is it not a coincidence that our city wants to invest so much into building and revamping structures to house the homeless.

How many of our city officials have a personal interest and are connected to local “non-profits”. I love Bakersfield, but it’s becoming a city I don’t recognize. You don’t have to take my word for it….just spend time on the streets and have a conversation a homeless person.

Answer: This is a sad story. We do have people being sent to Bakersfield with false promises and the city Is trying to build massive housing that will lure people from all over the country into Bakersfield. The Mission does offer a good service but the men all are housed together, separate from women. They have some rules in place but I'm not about the giving up your cell phone for a year.

As long as our city leaders start investing in homeless, we are going to look more attractive to homeless NGOs across the country who can collect money getting people here. Other areas like Southern California will use this city as a dumping ground as well.
