Scientists discovered that this repeating radio signal comes from a type of cosmic phenomenon known as a Fast Radio Burst (FRB). One of the most unusual sources, called FRB 180916, sends out powerful bursts of radio waves every 16.35 days from a galaxy about 470 million light-years away.
What makes this signal so fascinating is its regular pattern. For about four days, the source becomes active and emits radio bursts, then it remains quiet for around twelve days before repeating the cycle. This predictable behavior is extremely rare among fast radio bursts.
Astronomers are still investigating the exact cause. Possible explanations include a highly magnetized neutron star called a magnetar, a neutron star orbiting another massive object, or other extreme cosmic environments. The signal travels across millions of years of space before finally reaching Earth, carrying valuable clues about the distant universe.
Although it sounds mysterious, there is no evidence that the signal is artificial or sent by intelligent life. Instead, it is helping scientists better understand some of the most energetic and puzzling objects in the cosmos.
