Perceived Value

Perceived Value A bi-weekly podcast hosted and produced by contemporary jeweler Sarah Rachel Brown.

If talking open and honestly about money makes you uncomfortable - this is not the podcast for you. Perceived Value is a self-produced podcast during which Sarah Rachel Brown interviews artists about about their careers, personal lives, failures, accomplishments, and asks the question: how do you make it all happen?

I recorded this conversation just outside Medellín, Colombia, in the family home and studio of contemporary jeweler and author . It’s an interview, but moreso an intimate conversation where my friend tells me about his upbringing in Colombia during the height of violence in the late 80s and early 90s.

How that led to his father insisting he leave the country and move to Boston to study business and marketing. We discuss familial expectations and choosing jewelry and creative fulfillment over financial security.

Nicolás shares about the origin of his jewelry books and how an unpaid opportunity became a long-term publishing career.

We discuss his return to Colombia after more than two decades abroad, his grief, his inheritance, and his settling into a slower rhythm of life.

His current story is that of reconnecting with Colombian identity, landscape, and community. Of creating space for rest before re-entering creative production.

I learned so much about my friend, and I am excited to share it with you in episode 87 of season 9 - the CONNECTOR series featuring Colombian artists. 🇨🇴

It's been well over a year since this interview was recorded, and it's finally seeing the light of day. Life happens - projects come up, and this wonderful conversation and a handful of others were recorded in 2023/2024 and never released. This backlog of recordings is Season 8 of the podcast: Light Of Day.

This conversation focuses on the Penland School of Craft Core Fellowship. Since recording, the program has evolved, and certain aspects we discuss may no longer be accurate. Still, the heart of the fellowship—and its impact on artists—remains at the core of this episode.

2026 applications accepted Jul 15 – Oct 8, 2025. Make sure to learn about the current program HERE.

“I don’t think you’re speaking on behalf of all other Core Fellows. I think I just wanted a perspective on it. I think also, any experience, at any program you’re at, at craft schools, at art centers, universities, or whatever—in fact, no one’s perfect, we’re all deeply flawed [artists and programs], and programs are always working to be better and that’s something that I really value about Penland is that they’re always working towards being better and acknowledging that they can be and trying.”

- Sarah Rachel Brown, Host

Every Core Fellow’s experience is different, but the impact is undeniable. In this episode, Brandon Lopez reflects on what it means to be part of a program that has shaped artists for decades, and how Penland continues to grow and evolve.

Perceived Value Ep 82! ✨ Season 8: Light of Day ✨

At the Core of It: Penland Core Fellowship Then & Now with Brandon Lopez

This episode was recorded in 2024 at the Penland School of Craft, where I was the Andrew Glasgow Craft Research Resident.

In Ep 82 of Perceived Value, I sit down with Brandon Lopez, then a second-year Core Fellow, to compare our fellowship experiences; how the program shaped my life and career, why chose craft school over academia, and how the fellowship has evolved. Since its recording, the program has undergone changes, so not all details are current—but the heart of the Core Fellowship and its impact on artists remains at the center of this conversation.

🗓 Applications for the 2026 Core Fellowship are open from July 15 to October 8, 2025.

What I paid to live in Chile 🇨🇱 April - May. 💰️ I'm obsessed with my monthly budget and determined to lower my cost of living as a full-time solo traveler, so I am thrilled to be under budget for the second month in a row! I'm focused on paying off my debt via the method and putting $100-200 monthly towards my Emergency Fund. Every dollar saved really matters right now.

My biggest fear when taking the leap as a full-time digital nomad was the possibility of one of my remote work contracts ending while I was traveling, and I learned in April that this would happen come September. THE WILD THING IS THIS: I'm not 100% in panic mode. 😵 I've put a lot of work into growing my financial literacy and understanding where my money goes. I have a little cushion, and I know I will be okay. I also have an excellent relationship with this client, and they have given me plenty of time to secure new work.

Perhaps my lack of panic and fear relates to living a lifestyle that aligns with my values. Close friends and family keep telling me I ✨️sound happy✨️ (I feel it, too.) My contract would still end even if I were still in Philadelphia because my client no longer wants the position to be remote, and I am not interested in moving for the job.

I am stressed about finding work - that's normal, but that stress is not crippling - it's . And honestly, every time I am forced to find a new client or role, it has always led to growth in some capacity. 💙

What I paid to live in Peru 🇵🇪 March - April. 💰️ I'm very new to long-term solo traveling, and in my first months, I lived as if I were on an extended vacation. No regrets - I needed to hit the ground running. However, this is not a vacation, and if I don't pace myself, I'll burn out.

I've learned that a month feels like the perfect amount of time to familiarize myself with a new city or country, but not too long that I'll feel stuck if I'm not enjoying a location or my apartment is less than ideal.

Budget-wise, the longer I stay, the cheaper my experience becomes. I can establish a routine of cooking, which saves on food costs, and extended stays typically receive discounts. I also spend much less on travel - it all adds up.

I can't deny feeling conflicted over not going to places like Arequipa or Cusco during my first visit to Peru; the Machu Picchu FOMO was intense. BUT this month helped me lean into the fact that I don't have to fit everything in during my first visit to a country. I plan to live this for the foreseeable future. It's not a vacation or a once-in-a-lifetime trip. I can always come back, and when I do, I'll have a little experience to help me. 🩵

On a snowy afternoon, the two jewelers took some time to catch up. Although Sarah was very familiar with Erin’s current business, , she knew little about her background. In the 80th episode of Perceived Value, host is in Seattle, WA over the Thanksgiving holiday. It's November of 2023, and Sarah has set up her microphones in David Chatt's guest apartment, which she's fortunate to stay in for the week. It's a charming and cozy apartment and reflects David’s eye for design and impeccable taste.

and Sarah's friendship has evolved from benefactor/artist to friends to chosen family, and the two begin by sharing how they were brought into each other's lives. David speaks to how his creative practice began, how his parents' talents inspired him, how he navigates between following his passions and monetizing his abilities, the preciousness of studio time, his relationship with his things, the importance of a good editor, and his fascination with rocks.
