New paper for our lab! Our very own Aarin Allen published the second chapter of his dissertation!

Results indicate that a macroalgae-rich diet provides readily digestible energy but contains significantly less fiber, and exhibits altered nutritional balances compared to seagrass. Such a dietary transition may exacerbate malnutrition risks to manatees in Florida. Thank you so much to Save the Manatee Club for funding this work! A vary happy birthday to our very own Dr Guillaume Chandelier! Guillaume investigates the effects of climate change on small cetaceans in the North Atlantic. He also run multiple projects on the foraging ecology of small cetaceans in tropical marine ecosystems. We are so glad to have you in our lal, Guillaume!! 🇫🇷

New science out: Led by Rodrigo Tardin and Guilherme Maricato with the participation of 50 other scientists from six countries, this work shows how a coastal dolphin species occurring in tropical waters could be affected by climate change. Guiana dolphins might just lose nearly 50% of their suitable habitats. Marine Protected Areas will obviously fail in safeguarding dolphins now but even more in the future. Our lab just completed our second field season in northern Norway to deploy satellite-linked transmitters on long-finned pilot whales, killer whales and s***m whales. 11 tags were deployed, over 20 biopsy samples and lots of data collected! Thank you so much to our collaborators at Whale2Sea and at the university of Tromsø! Norway has been so amazing, as usual!!

Yesterday, we tested and deployed our newest biologging device that records high resolution videos, depth, acceleration, temperature, position and orientation… but also sounds! We tested the device on 3 beluga whales for at least 30 minutes each. Results were amazing and we will soon deploy these tags on free ranging pilot whales next month in northern Norway! Thank you to the team of SeaWorld San Antonio for helping us in making this happen and to their amazing whales! Belugas are so special! SeaWorld San Antonio
