Baldwyn routs Wheeler to advance to Prentiss County Tournament title game
The Baldwyn News
Booneville — Carter Craven had a game-high 22 points and Ashton Grice snagged nine rebounds as Baldwyn started ferociously, sleepwalked through the second quarter, and stormed through the second half of a 61-46 win over Wheeler in the semi-finals of the Prentiss County Tournament Friday night.
Baldwyn now advances to Saturday’s championship round game at 7:30 p.m. against New Site.
The Bearcats quickly put up four points to open the game. A scoreless couple of minutes turned into a 13-2 lead midway through the quarter as Baldwyn allowed one Eagles score before going on a 7-0 run. Wheeler didn’t light up the board again until 2:15 to go in the first and pulled the only points the rest of the way, with Baldwyn holding an 18-6 lead to start the second.
Colton Hayes opened the quarter with a three-point shot, and that was all the scoring the Bearcats would do for the next six minutes. That allowed Wheeler to tighten the game to just a five-point advantage for Baldwyn. Hayes finally broke the drought for the Bearcats with a score from underneath with 1:43 to go. Jaylan Ewing followed with a three and Wheeler responded on a turnover, but Baldwyn got the last word with Carter Craven drilling a three-pointer with three seconds to go to take a 29-18 lead at the break.
Scoring was much more evenly matched in the third with the Bearcats holding a 15-12 advantage and a 44-28 lead headed into the fourth. The Bearcats ran out to a 50-28 lead in the fourth before Wheeler broke the 6-0 run with a three-point shot with under six minutes to go. Baldwyn controlled the game the rest of the way, holding as much as a 25-point edge before Wheeler closed the gap in the 61-46 win.
Four Cats scored in double-digits for the game: followed by Carter Craven were Jaylan Ewing (13), Hayes (12), and Trey Craven (10).
Below, Wheeler’s Case Null almost leapfrogs Baldwyn’s Ashton Grice, bringing both down and drawing a foul in the second quarter. (News photo
