Baltimore County Public Schools recently sent all parents & staff a survey regarding Omnilert — the AI weapons detection software installed on cameras throughout the district. Sergeant Clyde Boatwright says the technology is too new and he worries if there is a tragedy at a school, he doesn’t know who would be held accountable if it’s the artificial intelligence that fails. Project Baltimore, before a recent Harford County Board of Education meeting, asked the HCPS Superintendent and BOE President about the hiring of Lawrence Smith. Smith was hired while awaiting trial on 15 federal charges. In October, he admitted to stealing $215,000 in fraudulent overtime from Baltimore City Schools while working there. Despite everything that has happened, both the Superintendent and Board president stand behind the decision to hire Smith.
