“You’re a really nice girl, but I don’t think we should be together.”
We were sitting on the pavement on a warm summer night when Abnet said this to me. In that moment, it would have been normal to be hurt- to be bitter for being friend zoned... I mean, we had had so many fun times together that I figured, we would be so good together... so perfect! We were both quirky and fun. But *shrug* I let it go, I let him go. I thought to myself, he isn’t meant to be mine and that’s ok. I care about him, but I’m still young. I had just gotten out of college, and I still had lots to learn about who I was as a young adult. It was not time.
That was 2011...
Over the years, Abnet and I stayed in touch. Occasionally, we would meet up for coffee or movies or pizza. It was always a great time! I even remember one night when I called on Abnet to bring me food because I was too sick. Or another time, when my car battery had given up the ghost and he came to jump it. He was always a very kind friend to me.
Fast forward to 2016. One Sunday, I went to visit a new church. The service was great and, after two hours, it ended. Among the lovely faces shuffling past saying hello and goodbye, I noticed a familiar face... It was my friend, Abnet! It had been a long time since we had seen one another.
“Hi!” he said beaming at me from across the aisle.
Little did I know, that moment had sparked something in Abnet’s heart. It was that moment when he no longer saw me as a friend. He saw me as something more than that. After that day, we started dating intentionally. And after a short year, we went on to get married in October of 2017. It’s still funny to me today when I think about sitting on the pavement on the warm summer night back in 2011.
