The origin of Father’s Day is rooted in early 20th-century America—and believe it or not, it was actually inspired by Mother’s Day.

📜 The Origin Story

1909 – A woman named Sonora Smart Dodd from Spokane, Washington heard a Mother’s Day sermon and thought fathers deserved recognition too—especially her own.

Her father, William Jackson Smart, was a Civil War veteran and single dad who raised six kids after his wife died. Sonora thought: “If moms get a day, dads should too.”

She pushed for it hard. Churches, shops, and government officials got behind her.

1910 – The first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910 in Spokane.

🧓 Why June?

Because that was the birth month of Sonora’s father. So June stuck as the official vibe.

🏛️ Official Recognition Took A WHILE

Presidents like Calvin Coolidge (1924) and Lyndon B. Johnson (1966) endorsed it—but didn’t make it official.

Finally, in 1972, President Richard Nixon signed it into law as a national holiday, celebrated every third Sunday of June.

💡 Fun Fact

Big corporations (👔👞💼) loved the idea—ties, tools, and wallets became hot Father’s Day gifts, helping it grow into a full-on commercial holiday.
