Excited for this interview between two class-act broadcasters. Tune in tomorrow!

Live from the Ed Sullivan theater in NYC on Thursday, January 8, Stephen Colbert will interview Terry Gross on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in celebration of Terry Gross’ 50th anniversary hosting Fresh Air with Terry Gross.

In a 2021 interview, Stephen said that Terry is “the greatest interviewer working today.”

Thursday’s interview will be a unique in-person reunion for the two. Watch it at 11:35pm ET / 8:35pm PT on CBS.

Longtime Midday host Tom Hall will step down from the daily host role in early 2026 and transition into a new role as WYPR’s Senior News Analyst. Tom will continue to contribute interviews, analysis and reporting across the station’s news and public affairs programming.

Beginning in January 2026, Tom will move to a three-day hosting schedule (Tuesday–Thursday) as part of a planned transition while WYPR conducts a search for the show’s next full-time host. When the new host is chosen, Tom will shift fully into his new role, contributing interviews, features and essays and spearheading special projects.

“It has been my honor and privilege to host Midday for the past 10 years, to be the steward of this storied show, and to be in conversation with a great community of engaged listeners who share an interest in exploring new ideas and solutions to the challenges we face,” said Tom. “I am choosing to step back from host duties to give someone else the opportunity to bring their perspective to our show. I'll continue to engage with WYPR listeners in my new role, contributing interviews, reporting and commentary to Midday and other programs.”

Tom joined WYPR in 2003 and quickly became one of WYPR’s most recognizable and trusted voices. Over more than two decades, he grew from a cultural contributor and program host into the guiding force behind Midday, shaping it into one of Maryland’s most respected public affairs programs. Under his leadership, Midday has upheld a long tradition of thoughtful, community-centered journalism, including earning a Regional Edward R. Murrow Award in 2020.

Join us in thanking Tom for his time at Midday, and we look forward to his contributions as WYPR’s new Senior News Analyst!

From our President and General Manager, Craig Swagler:

Tomorrow, the U.S. House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on H.R. 4, a funding package that would rescind all previously approved federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) in FY 2026 and FY 2027. This is a direct threat to the future of public media across the country—and we need your voice now to stop it.

Today, the House passed a procedural rule that cleared the way for tomorrow’s final vote. If passed, this bill would then move to the Senate, where it only needs 50 votes to become law.

This dangerous legislation would devastate hundreds of public media stations, especially in rural and small-town communities where public radio is often the only trusted source for local news, emergency information, arts, and culture. Entire regions risk becoming information and media deserts. The impact is real.

We are working urgently with allies to stop this bill before it gains momentum in the Senate—but we need your help before the House vote tomorrow.

Take Action Before the Vote:

🔴 Call your U.S. Representative TODAY. Urge them to vote NO on H.R. 4 and protect CPB funding.
🔴 Visit www.ProtectMyPublicMedia.org to email or call—it only takes a minute.
🔴 Share this message with friends, neighbors, and colleagues who care about public radio.
🔴 Support Baltimore Public Media by giving to our Fortifying the Future campaign.

Public media has always stood by you—in times of crisis, recovery, and everyday life. Now, we’re asking you to stand with us—to protect one of the last remaining independent, non-commercial media voices in America.

Act now. Tomorrow may be too late.

With urgency and appreciation,

Craig Swagler
