Healing is not always moving away from death, but closer to it.

Lacing Life and Death responds to Janet Lewis’s “Meadow Turf,” a poem that finds living and dead leaves joined in the same field. Damen extends that thought through a long, narrow painting where growth, decay, color, and line occupy one continuous space.

In a culture eager to move past grief, this work suggests how attention is a VITAL form of care for our world.

How can art respond to a public loss without turning a PERSON into a SYMBOL?

Jessica Damen created A Healer Until the End, II in response to the death of ICU nurse Alex Pretti. Drawing on her own past as a nurse and a poem by Joseph Fasano, she centers the act of care: the habit of asking another person if they are all right.

Tonight’s Off the Page program brings out this multi-discipline exchange: painting, poetry, music, for conversation sake about OUR world through art.

Facts describe our environmental crisis. Art can make us FEEL deeply what is at stake.

Inspired by Michael Salcman’s poem “Mother of the Bay,” Jessica Damen imagines the Chesapeake as both habitat and womb: a place of abundance under pressure. The work makes ecological change personal without reducing it to data or despair.

Tomorrow night, Salcman joins Damen and other artists for a live conversation about how one form begins another.

A Fisherman’s Aurora Borealis responds to Maj Ragain’s poem “A Luminous Phenomenon,” which moves between aging, medicine, prayer, memory, and a childhood night beneath the northern lights.

What’s powerful about collaboration is it builds relationship into the very art objects it produces.

Jessica Damen began Be Secret and Exult in 2003 in response to a poem by Maj Ragain, then substantially reworked it in 2021. The painting carries this history. It shows how returning to a work isn't necessarily to "correct" but to encourage it to change the same way the artist has.
