It’s about more than showcasing work. It’s about building relationships, supporting artistic growth, and helping artists take the next step in their journey.

What happens when we look at African modernism beyond the European art historical framework?

In this episode, Nancy Dantas reflects on the scholarship of Ghanaian artist and art historian Atta Kwami, whose work offers important ways of understanding the histories and development of modern art in Africa.

From the emergence of art schools to mural painting, drawing, and the role of photography, Kwami’s research traces artistic traditions that challenge the idea that African modernism can be understood through a predominantly European framework.

His work reminds us that the history of modern art in Africa is not a footnote to a European narrative — it has its own histories, practices, and intellectual traditions.

This is one of the many conversations in our episode with Nancy Dantas, curator and art historian, on Everything Is Connected.

What happens when African modernism challenges the categories of Western art history?

African modernism has long questioned the divisions and hierarchies through which modern art has traditionally been understood.

In this episode, Nancy Dantas reflects on the ways African artists helped destabilize the boundaries of Western modernism — including through the landmark 1966 exhibition in Dakar, which brought different artistic practices and approaches into conversation.

For Nancy, exhibition histories offer a way to trace these moments of disruption, where established categories begin to shift and new possibilities for understanding African modernism emerge.

This is one of the many important parts of the conversation in our episode with Nancy Dantas, curator and art historian, on Everything Is Connected.
