🎨 The tourist who bought a piece on their vacation and went home isn't necessarily gone. They're just waiting to find out if you thought they were worth remembering.

Most galleries treat every sale as a one-off β€” and the retention gap that creates lives quietly inside some of the most beautiful gallery spaces in the country.

In this month's The Curator's Inbox, I'm reporting back on what the galleries who've figured out retention are actually doing differently β€” and three practices any gallery can borrow, regardless of size or market.

Do you walk farmers markets as part of how you discover artists β€” or is this a practice you haven't tried yet?

There's something unusually revealing about watching an artist work a live selling environment. You see how they talk about their work, how they read a room, how they handle a browser versus a buyer. It's a different kind of portfolio review β€” and it tells you things a submission packet never will.

Some of the most compelling artists showing in galleries today built their confidence and their collector vocabulary at a Saturday market first. That floor time shows.

I'd genuinely like to know if this is part of your discovery practice. Hit reply below.

Our latest Curator's Inbox article is about exactly this β€” what to watch for when you walk a market, and why it's worth your time.

When was the last time you walked a farmers market and really analyzed it?

Not as a shopper. As a curator. The market floor is one of the most honest places in the art world β€” artists selling directly, collectors buying without pressure, and everything on display including who connects with what and why.

Our latest Curator's Inbox article shares what we watch for at a farmers market β€” and why it matters for your gallery program.

When an artist submission lands in your inbox β€” portfolio images attached, statement tucked at the bottom β€” do you read the statement first, last, or at all?

Be honest. Nobody's watching.

For a lot of galleries, the answer is: somewhere between "eventually" and "only if the work makes the first cut."

That's not a criticism. It's a signal worth paying attention to.

The statement won't always tell you whether to say yes. But read at the right moment and with the right questions in mind, it almost always tells you something. The question is whether you're asking.

This issue of The Curator's Inbox looks at what artist statements are actually telling you at every level β€” from co-op to retail gallery to institutional program β€” and what your answer reveals about the kind of organization you are.

Twenty-six years ago, a group of Cannon Beach gallery owners made a decision that most gallery communities never make.

By every market logic, they should have been competing with each other for the same collectors. Instead they decided the rising tide was worth more than the territorial advantage.

What they built from that decision β€” three festivals, a nonprofit association, and a regional identity that draws collectors from across the Pacific Northwest every year β€” is one of the most instructive models in Oregon's art world.

They decided the rising tide was worth more than the territorial advantage. Twenty-six years later, the proof is in every gallery on Hemlock Street.

This issue of The Curator's Inbox breaks down exactly what the Cannon Beach Gallery Group built β€” and the three things any Oregon gallery community can learn from it.

You already know more than most people about what it takes to run a gallery.

The inventory decisions. The artist relationships. The collector who hasn't been in since last spring. The reception that went beautifully β€” and the one that didn't.

You know all of it. You live it.

The Curator's Inbox isn't here to tell you how to do your job. It's here to show you what's happening in the wider art world β€” and bring it back to you in a form that's actually useful.

A field report from someone who goes to the places you don't always have time to go, asks the questions you'd ask if you were in the room, and reports back honestly about what she found.
This is a peer conversation. You belong in it.
