Join us on Thursday, March 1 for the Opening Reception and Artist's Presentation at 6:00 pm!
The Eastern Monroe Public Library, in cooperation with the Pocono Arts Council presents “Along the Delaware”, a collection of works by artist James Gloria. On display now through March 28, 2018 in the Hughes Main Library at 1002 North 9th Street in Stroudsburg, these paintings capture the beauty of the most iconic locations in our area- including “View from Mt. Tammany” and “Delaware River, Easton” along with other notable locations along the Delaware River. An opening reception and presentation by Gloria is planned for Thursday, March 1st, from 6 - 8 pm in the adjacent Edinger Community Room. James will talk about the materials and techniques used to produce the oil paintings displayed; preparation of gesso and oil, creating impasto and gel media, and other tricks of the trade. Light refreshments will be served.
The drama of the Delaware Water Gap has drawn visitors for decades to its folds of ancient rock, split by the winding Delaware river. Having visited the area briefly in 1986, the mountains left an indelible impression on artist James Gloria. Three years later, he returned, settling in Mt. Bethel. He began painting the local landscape, sometimes hiking along the river, or up Mt. Tammany, at other times setting up on the street at dusk, trying to capture the fleeting light.
James received extensive training in art and architectural history, drawing, rendering and literature while earning a BFA in Scene and Costume Design for Theater, from Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University. His training sparked an interest in the materials and methods of art making.
This series represents Gloria’s intuitive approach to site selection, and an interest in capturing the immediacy of light and form in quick brushstrokes. Using his own prepared panels, with hand-made impasto and gel media, he engages in a dialogue with the subject; reacting to changing light and conditions while exploring the dynamics of traditional materials.
In 2006 he founded the non-profit Totts Gap Arts Institute, a community arts center for fine and performing arts in Mt. Bethel, Pennsylvania, acting as Artistic Director and instructor.
James lives in Mt. Bethel with his wife, Angeline, and two children.
