🚧 Trail construction in Acadia National Park ‘s western mountains. 🚧

Cold Brook Trail where it connects with the forest road is being ripped up and flattened with gravel. To know me is to know I highly dislike gravel for trails, especially when it’s not a high traffic area! Yes, it’ll make it easier and faster to hike - but roots and rocks are the character of these trails not gravel. Cold Brook is known to have one muddy section after a rain, but that section is minimal compared to all of this construction. How about a bog board to eliminate people going off trail to avoid mud. The massive pile of gravel on the road suggests they are redoing a long stretch of this trail.

And Sluiceway!! My beloved steep and rugged Sluiceway Trail… I’m convinced it’s being rerouted. Orange flagging tape all over the bottom section of trail that does not go in the direction of the current trail. The pulley system is in place - ladders are out. I can’t imagine the plan is to keep the current level of difficulty.

What would I love? 1) Trail construction that challenges your hike instead of making it easier and 2) if they reopened the abandoned trail that connects Sluiceway to Bernard Mt Trail. (Which I still haven’t found)

So, if you’ve never experienced Sluiceway you better get over there soon. Cold Brook is too far gone IMO.

A little Jordan Pond-esque without the crowds. After my run I had one hour to do something, and Lower Hadlock Pond was the perfect solution. I decided to set my timer on my phone to 30 minutes and turn myself around when the timer went off. I kept checking to see how much time had elapsed, and to my surprise it was less than 10 minutes to the Norumbega Mt trail, and I made it to the bridge with 5 minutes left. At that point I was more than halfway around and just decided to keep going.

As it turns out when I am not hiking with kids, dogs, or in winter I can get around the pond in 42 minutes. 😀

Lower Hadlock Pond was one of my sister’s favorite spots on the island. She seeked calm and quiet places where she could walk her dogs in peace. I need to lean into those quiet places a little more.

Western Mountain Road (and connector) for an easy, no stress run. 🫶 Lots of interconnecting forest roads over there. I will have to come back for a longer loop down to Seal Cove Pond. I forgot my Garmin inreach in the car, and I do not like venturing into the unknown with spotty cell service. Also, fairly certain there were gunshots in the area (on private land) - which helped my decision to head back to Lurvey Spring Rd.

How many people did I see? Just 1. A park ranger working at the intersection of the road and Cold brook trail.

There so much more to Acadia than Sand Beach, Beehive, and Jordan Pond!

A Witch Hole and Eagle Lake combo for a weekly long run!

Started at the Hulls Cove Visitor Center to add an element of a steep uphill. Then I worked my way around half of Witch Hole to the connection for Eagle Lake. Eagle Lake has rolling hills with one larger hill on the backside of the lake. By the time I was back at the Witch Hole side even the smaller hills seemed like mountains to my legs. A few times on the small hills at the end I think my consciousness went to another dimension while my legs kept moving. 😅

Good thing the small hills are followed by small downhills, and eventually they lead you to the very steep downhill back to Hulls Cove. My watch clocked me at 12.75 miles - so close to 13! Instead of running circles in the parking lot to hit 13, I stretched before I jammed myself in the car. Some days I care about hitting a whole number, but I’ve learned it’s more important for me to stretch my legs. Equallly important is a rest day.

Sunset at Schoodic! 🌅

While I was camping I went back to Frazer Point for a very quiet dinner with a view. Maine sunsets just hit different, and I am so grateful that I no longer have to wait 51 weeks out of the year to experience them.

Spontaneous moments are the best type of moments - especially when your husband encourages you to get out and go do the thing you love! I wasn’t planning to head back to Schoodic so soon, but there were same day walk-in sites available so I figured why not. This would be one more step in getting me more comfortable sleeping in a tent, and it was a beautiful day to boot.

Walk-in sites are within the Schoodic Woods Campground, but they are more secluded with each site having its own wooded location.

I set up my tent and then I was off to explore.
Decided to incorporate a run and a hike so I first ran the Frazer Creek Bike Path to the Loop road and visited Frazer Point, Ravens Nest, Schoodic Point, and then I ran back to the loop and hiked up Anvil Trail to Schoodic Head and Buck Cove Mt. The Wonsqueak Bike Path led me back to the campground. Weather was perfect at the start even a bit hot. Some very nasty clouds rolled in while at Schoodic Point though, and from there I was hyper focused on the sky. Most of Schoodic Peninsula’s trails are in the trees, but there are points on the trails where you are the tallest thing out there. It ended up raining on and off, but there was no lightning which was my main concern.

After that I debated to sunset or not to sunset (I did sunset), then I snuggled in for a night of “what noise is that out there”. 😂 The bugs finally quieted down and I did sleep for a few hours. At 3am I woke up to something moseying by my tent from one section of woods across to the next. At 4am there was another low grunting creature in a different area, but by that point the sun was almost ready to come up. I heard an owl and then the birds woke up and I knew I made it. 😃

I spent the morning watching the mosquitos try to get to me from the other side of the tent netting, and then forced myself up for a run on the bike paths down to Wonsqueak Harbor, and followed that with a quick hike on the Lower Harbor Trail.

Fantastic 24 hours in a place that was not on my camping list for this year! 🎉🎉🎉

May 16: My first longer mileage day in Acadia since the fall, and my first time on Cadillac West Face this season! 15 miles across 6 summits (not those 6 summits), and just an all out fantastic day to be in the park. I can’t express enough how much I love days like this. No time constraints, no stress, just pure joy, plus peace and quiet in my own head. 😀

6 summits a different way: The Triad, Penobscot, South Bubble, North Bubble, Pemetic, and Cadillac via the West Face. The captions include the route. ⛰️⛰️⛰️ ⛰️⛰️⛰️

Followed that up with a run the next day starting from the old Thompson Island visitor center. 10 miles on tired legs (and there was absolutely some walking involved). I managed to suck it up keep my feet moving, especially on the way back. The MDI marathon isn’t going to run itself, and I will need to find a balance between hiking and running.

I needed two days of rest to recover from this weekend. Worth it. 💯

Schoodic was so peaceful last week. I was planning a little driving and a little hiking, but when I got there I ended up not being in the mood to hike. That’s okay I’ll be back. No bad days in Acadia.📍

Around the Mountain! My favorite carriage road run eveeeeer, and I finally had a break through with a 9:37avg pace. I wasn’t planning on that happening, especially because I had kind of a crappy run week, but I kept hearing my daughter in my head tell me to “lock in” (as she calls it).

I decided shortly after I started that there would be no stopping for pictures, no stopping my watch to climb under any bridges, just no stopping, period. I survived all of the initial uphills mentally and physically and I was all in on the downhill. By the time I was around to Jordan Pond I was lovinggggg my run. It doesn’t happen often, so when those moments come you have to enjoy it. 😅

This was the day after I drove out and hiked Saddleback so I don’t know what was with me! I’m feeling a teeny bit wiped out today, but it’s raining and yucky out so it’s a perfect rest day.

*I still need to post from last weekend: 25 miles over two days. I have a ton of pictures which is partially why I haven’t posted yet. Other runs too that I haven’t shared. Maybe I will get to it today as I rot on the couch.*
