Open letter to supermarkets and chains obsessed with self-checkouts:
Yes, we understand exactly what you’re doing.
Yesterday, I walked into your store.
I picked out my groceries.
I scanned every item.
I packed everything myself.
I paid — without the help of a single cashier.
And then?
You stopped me at the exit to check my receipt.
Wait a second.
I did the shopping.
I did the work.
And now you’re treating me like a potential thief?
This isn’t service.
This is unpaid labor — wrapped in a nice layer of mistrust.
Here’s the truth:
If customers are doing the work of your cashiers, then treat them with the same respect and trust.
Or better yet — hire back real people.
Because no, this isn’t about “convenience.”
It’s about cutting staff, boosting profits, and dumping the workload on those who are just supposed to buy —
without pay, without protection, without even a “thank you.”
What happened to the student who relied on that job to pay for school?
The single parent trying to make it through the month?
The retiree who found a bit of dignity and companionship at work?
Where are they now — while I’m doing their job for free?
If I’m the cashier, where’s my paycheck?
Where’s my employee discount?
My lunch break?
You can’t have it all.
We are customers, not free labor.
We are not your cashiers.
We are not your security staff.
And if you keep treating us like unpaid workers,
don’t be surprised when we start acting like it.
