Bardstown lost one of its biggest champions today. Had the honor to interview her several times over the years. What a special lady. No one knew Bardstown like Dixie knew Bardstown!

BARDSTOWN, Ky. — The City of Bardstown is mourning the loss of former Mayor Dixie Hibbs, who served as mayor for four years and as a member of the Bardstown City Council for two decades.

Hibbs, remembered as a dedicated public servant and passionate advocate for Bardstown’s history and growth, was widely respected for her leadership and vision. She was also an accomplished author, publishing several books that highlighted the community’s rich past.

“Dixie Hibbs was a true servant leader whose love for Bardstown could be seen in everything she did and the many books she published,” Mayor Dick Heaton said in a statement. “Her legacy of leadership, knowledge of history and commitment to the city will live on for generations.”

Funeral and memorial arrangements will be announced by her family.

The City of Bardstown extended its condolences to Hibbs’ family, recognizing her lifelong contributions to preserving the community’s traditions while helping shape its future.

One person was killed and four others injured after an apparent tornado touched down in southeastern Washington County Friday morning. Officials with the National Weather Service Office in Louisville say that the estimated 115 mph winds were indicative of an EF2 tornado.

One person is dead and five injured in Washington County following a storm system that moved through Central Kentucky, Friday, May 30, 2025.

Kevin Devine, director of Washington County Emergency Management, says that the injured were transported to Ephraim McDowell Medical Center in Danville. Three of those, including a three year old child, were transferred to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. Their conditions are not known.

Washington County Judge Executive Timothy Graves says that two homes and several other buildings were destroyed.

Graves and Devine thanked the first responders who worked to help the affected following the storms.

The possible tornado hit what officials say is a sparsely populated area near the Washington-Boyle County line. The first calls reporting damage came in at about 7:11 am, according to Devine.

National Weather Service officials are in Washington County surveying the damage.

In a statement, Gov. Andy Beshear asked the public to keep those affected in their prayers.

“Please pray for these families and everyone affected,” said Beshear.
