HALLOWEEN EVENTS

Halloween Spooktacular

The Halloween Spooktacular will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 28, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in downtown Bardstown. If you or your business would like to donate for the Halloween Spooktacular, please drop off unopened bags of candy at the temporary Tourism Office (96 Court Square) by Friday, Oct. 24.

We are so thankful for our downtown businesses who make this free community event possible each year, but with thousands of kids coming through, the candy adds up quickly. Any donation, big or small, will make a difference and is truly appreciated.

Trick-or-Treat at Nazareth

The annual Trick-or-Treat event at Nazareth will be held 4-6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23, at Nazareth Motherhouse Campus, 40 West Dr., Bardstown. Come dressed in your best costume and visit candy stations around the beautiful grounds of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. This event is free and open to the public, but registration is encouraged at nazareth.org/boo. Registrants will be entered for a chance to win a boo basket.

Nelson County High School trick or treat
The Nelson County High School Athletics will have a free trick or treating on the track 6-7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26. All Nelson County children are invited to attend and must be accompanied by an adult.

Cooper Trail trunk or treat

Cooper Trail Senior Living will have a Trunk-or-Treat event on Friday, Oct. 24, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Candy, decorated car trunks, photo opportunities, music and more for all ages. Everyone is welcome. Costumes encouraged.

This family-friendly event will bring together local families, children, and residents for a safe and fun Halloween celebration. Businesses are invited to decorate a trunk and pass out candy. There is no cost to participate, but spots are limited, so be sure to reserve yours soon! Just bring your decorated trunk, plenty of candy, and any business materials you’d like to share. Brian Tooley Racing trunk or treat

BTR annual trunk or treat will be 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25. Bring your ride and a trunk full of candy, or bring your little ones, or both. Free coffee and donuts from Hadorn's bakery, vendors and mobile car detailing on-site will be available.

Bardstown Baptist Church trunk or treat

Bardstown Baptist Church, 101 Brashear Ave. in Bardstown will have a trunk or treat 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday Oct. 26 in the church parking lot.

New Hope Community Ballpark trunk or treat

New Hope Community Ballpark will have a trunk or treat at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26 at 880 JT Riggs Road in New Hope. Games, Halloween fun, trick or treating and refreshments will be featured.

Bernheim Forest trunk or treat

The Spooktacular Trunk or Treat, presented by the Southeast Bullitt Fire Department and Bernheim Forest will take place on Sunday, Oct. 26 from 3 to 6 p.m. at Parking Lot D at Bernheim. The community is invited to come together to welcome families to safely trick-or-treat from decorated trunks. Guests are encouraged to dress up for this fun, family event. Guests of all ages will also have the opportunity to explore a firetruck and other emergency vehicles. You’ll meet firefighters and learn about fire safety. Bridge closure in Bloomfield area
Beginning on Oct. 27 the Stevens Lane crossing Big Springs Branch Creek near 1000 Stevens Lane will be closed due to replacement of the bridge. The time-frame for the closure shall be approximately 8-10 weeks pending weather.

Knights of Columbus tootsie roll drive
“The Bardstown Knights of Columbus Council 1290 will be conducting its annual Tootsie Roll Drive on Friday, Oct. 24 and Saturday, Oct. 25, at local shopping centers and at IGA in New Haven. Please greet our Knights and student volunteers who will be collecting on behalf of the physically and intellectually disadvantaged, for their job training programs at the Guthrie Opportunity Center.

Thanksgiving food drive
The Bardstown Knights of Columbus, Council 1290, will have its annual Thanksgiving food drive, starting Oct. 31 and continuing throughout the month of November. This drive is held annually, to honor the memory of deceased Knights and to benefit the Bread For Life Food Pantry, which serves the food insecure in Nelson County. Monetary donations are particularly helpful, since each dollar collected will purchase approximately five pounds of food. Monetary donations can be mailed or dropped off at the Knights of Columbus, 107 N. Fourth St., Bardstown, KY 40004. Please note Food Drive on your checks. Alternatively, you can go to PayPal.com and enter [email protected] to make a donation. Also, they will be accepting non perishable and canned food items at food bins placed in the rear of local churches.

Health Care Consumers - Get the Facts
Anyone who has, needs or wants health care and insurance in 2026 is invited
to a presentation by Emily Beauregard, Executive Director of Kentucky Voices for Health on Tuesday, Nov. 4, at 6 p.m. at the Nelson County Library, 201 Cathedral Manor, Bardstown. Open enrollment begins Nov. 1. Learn about the
requirements for keeping Medicaid (Passport); the new premiums and co-pays
for those on Medicare and for those of you purchasing insurance on
your own at Healthcare.gov (or Kynect). Ms. Beauregard will be discussing the
insurance premium increases as well as what is happening to your premium
tax credit for 2026. All residents of the Commonwealth of Kentucky are welcome

OCTOBER

Mosquito Fogging Program
The City of Bardstown's Mosquito Fogging Program has begun and will continue with the fogging every three weeks until the first frost of winter.
The city will begin fogging, as weather permits, from dusk until dawn on Oct. 22.
During fogging operations, please keep children away from the fogging vehicle, go inside and remain indoors while the fogging vehicle is in your neighborhood. We will not fog in the areas where residents have indicated health issues or concerns. If you would like to be added to the “No Fog List” please call City Hall at (502) 348-5947.

Loretto Motherhouse concert

Adrienne Fontenot, piano and Davis Hale, saxophone will give a concert at Loretto Motherhouse on Sunday, Oct. 26, at 3 p.m.

Nelson County Schools Glow Up

Nelson County Schools will have a Glow Up featuring arts, crafts, balloon animals and face painting, free books and story time, live music and lighting ceremony. A chili cook-off with free chili and food for purchase with food trucks will be available. This free event will be 5:30-8 p.m. Oct. 22 at Wickland, Home of Three Governors, 550 Bloomfield Road in Bardstown.

Van Buren Baptist Church fall community fest

Van Buren Baptist Church will have a fall community fest 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at 1488 Fairmount Road in Lawrenceburg. Music will be by the Good Ole Boys from Lawrenceburg. Soups, sandwiches and desserts will be available. Games for all ages, bounce house for kids, and drawings for various prizes. Everyone is invited to this free event. Nelson County NAACP 6th annual Freedom Fund Banquet

The Nelson County NAACP 6th annual Freedom Fund Banquet will be at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Nelson County Civic Center, 321 S. Third St. in Bardstown. Tickets are $60. Call vice-president Darlene Croom at (502) 294-9639.

African American History Museum library series

The Bardstown-Nelson County African American Heritage Museum, 315 N. Second St. in Bardstown is hosting a library series that will highlight interesting facts about Black History in Bardstown and Nelson County as told by local persons. The series will kick off Saturday, Oct. 25, at noon with guest speaker Charles “Gootie” Bivens. He will give insights how he has researched his Bivens genealogy through eight generations. He will give instructions on how individuals can research their own family history.

Bardstown Scarecrow Trail brings seasonal magic

The Stephen Foster Drama Association has announced the inaugural Bardstown Scarecrow Trail, a free, family-friendly event that will transform the driveway of The Stephen Foster Story Amphitheater into a vibrant display of creativity and community spirit. Open daily until dusk through Nov. 15, visitors can enjoy a drive-thru experience featuring a variety of scarecrows sponsored and created by local businesses, organizations, schools and artists. The event aims to celebrate the artistic talents of the Bardstown community while supporting the mission of the Stephen Foster Drama Association, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to producing professional live theater and promoting the arts in Kentucky. The event is free, but donations to the Stephen Foster Drama Association are encouraged. Trail visitors are also invited to vote for their favorite scarecrows between Oct. 6 and Nov. 7, with winners announced in multiple categories. A Bardstown resident, Mr. Joseph “Joe” Anthony Carter, 78, passed away Friday, Oct. 17, 2025, at Signature Healthcare at Colonial following a long illness.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, at Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home. Interment will be in St. Joseph Church Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 10 a.m. until time of the funeral service.

The Dedication of Dixie

Franklin Hibbs IV remembers being a youngster and going to his grandmother’s house, a historic home chock full of antiques, artifacts and other treasures — many of those treasures highly breakable.

The Rolling Fork River has always had debris blocking its water flow. However, in the last six months it has moved downstream, creating a larger problem for nearby landowners and Nelson County Government.

In 2024, Nelson County received permission from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to begin work on removing debris from the Rolling Fork River — specifically in a large bend in the river in the Nelsonville area. However, winter snow and spring floods prevented large machinery from being able to sit alongside the riverbank.

Bardstown High School senior Tate Hill has been tirelessly working to bring reform to Senate Bill 181 for schools across the state.

In March, the Kentucky General Assembly passed Senate Bill 181, which was signed into law in early April. This fall, school districts across the states complied with the new law asking them to select traceable communication methods.
