What I Wish I Knew as an Amateur Fighter

When I first started out, I thought fighting was all about wins and losses. I obsessed over records, over proving myself, over not wanting that one mark in the “L” column. What I didn’t realize then is that this way of thinking robs you of the joy that drew you to the sport in the first place. Psychology backs this up—when you chase only results, your brain is stuck in a loop of stress and anxiety, and performance actually suffers. But when you focus on play, on having fun, on being curious about what you can learn, you activate a state called flow. That’s when time disappears, the fight slows down, and you perform at your best. Learning to enjoy the pursuit—not the outcome—is what eventually carried me to five world titles. It wasn’t about chasing trophies, it was about chasing growth, and the fun I found in that process made me dangerous.

Another thing I wish I knew early was the importance of cutting weight the right way. Back then, I thought toughness meant doing it myself, sweating it out, starving, and pushing my body to extremes. What I didn’t see was how much damage I was doing on the inside—draining energy, hurting recovery, and taking years off my body for the sake of a short-term fix. Working with a nutritionist completely changed that. Having someone who understands the science, who can build a plan around me, made weight cuts smoother, healthier, and left me with gas in the tank to actually perform. That lesson took me a long time to learn, but it’s one that every young fighter should know: toughness isn’t about destroying yourself, it’s about being smart enough to take care of yourself.

The last lesson is maybe the hardest one—learning to let go. The fight game doesn’t love us back. It doesn’t care if we give it our whole heart, or if we bleed for it. At the end of the day, we’re just another fight on the card. Early on, that used to eat at me. I took every bad break personally, every setback like it was the end of the world. But the truth is, you can’t hold on to that. The only way to survive in this sport is to let things roll off your back, to be grateful for the good moments, and to keep moving forward. That shift—worrying less about what I can’t control and more about being the best version of me—has taken me further than anything else. In the end, gratitude and persistence are the real secrets.

About DonnyBrooke Fight Promotion

DonnyBrooke Fight Promotion started after the owner of XCP (Xtreme Combat Promotion) sold her business.

We had the opportunity to acquire the ring and other equipment to start our first few shows at the Moose Lodge in Williamstown.

The business is owned by the Thompson family.

Rex is the main partner who talks to the sponsors and fighters and also corresponded with the sanctioning body to have sanctioned fights in Vermont.
