It is with great pride that we announce that the M.M.U. Alumni Marching Band is officially accepted into the Salute to Independence Parade next July 3! Arranging is underway and should be wrapped up by mid-August. We can’t wait to get “Amber Waves” in front of our band members! More to come soon.

Following up on the surprise announcement that the Montrose Marching Unit Alumni Band will be performing in Philadelphia for the “Salute to Independence” Parade on July 3, 2026, CWJ Music House Publications is thrilled to announce that we have again been selected to be the official arranger! We have a really cool piece planned for both celebrations in Philly and Montrose next July. More details on both parades to come soon!

We write to be inspired to teach, and we teach to be inspired to create. Most importantly, the world of music is our PASSION; it is our motivation to light the fire under those around us. We are educators first, but creators at heart. We write with PURPOSE, inspiring musicians by PERFORMANCE of QUALITY, AFFORDABLE LITERATURE. Our product is the result of a desire to not only contribute to the world of music, but to bring something relevant and exciting to it as well. It is with great pride that we debut the most anticipated commercial release of 2025! We are thrilled to present VIKING SPIRIT by Christopher W. Johnson!

Viking Spirit was commissioned by the Readington Middle School Vikings band program (NJ) and their director Mrs. Samantha Lestrange. When approached by Samantha, she noted to me that they wanted something bold like a fanfare or concert opener, something to challenge yet motivate and excite her students! The work was premiered jointly with the Whitehouse Wind Symphony in May of 2025. This work is centered around the skill set of a developing middle school ensemble. It is structured in Rondo form incorporating catchy rhythms, strategic repetition, and thorough use of dynamics and expression to build interest around a powerful theme. While trumpets, clarinets, and saxophones carry the melody in the main theme, low winds and percussion provide a solid bass line and rhythmic accompaniment. If you're looking for an inspirational and fresh-sounding piece, this is sure to inspire your musicians and instill a profound sense of pride and spirit!

SPOTLIGHT ON OUR WRITERS SERIES CONTINUES:

For the month of June we are thrilled to feature John Wernega.

John Wernega is a multi-instrumentalist, music teacher, arranger, and director in South Jersey. He has a Bachelor of Music Education from Glassboro State College (1993), and he has a Masters in Music Education from Westminster Choir College of Rider University (2011).

John has taught Instrumental, Choral, Handbells, and K to 8 General Music at Quinton Township School since 1994. He started a barbershop harmony program at the school in the spring of 2014, and at this time he is the only music teacher in the country that has an elementary barbershop chorus. In 2019 he founded Head Start in Harmony, which is a yearly festival for elementary barbershop singing.

Articles about John's success with his students appear in Choral Director Magazine and School Band and Orchestra Magazine. In 2020 he was the recipient of the "Music Educator of the Year" Award by the National Association for Music Education and Barbershop Harmony Society. He was inducted into the Philadelphia Mummers String Band Hall of Fame in 2012 for his success in arranging.

John enjoys arranging for a wide variety of ensembles, including concert band, handbell choir, choir, barbershop chorus/quartet, British Brass Band, Orchestra, brass quintet, and instrumental quartets for all woodwind and brass instruments.
