We are heartbroken to share the passing of the Father of WGCC, Charles “Chuck” Platt — a pioneer, a mentor, and a beloved voice of the region. Chuck passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 25, 2025, at the age of 88.
If it wasn’t for Chuck, WGCC wouldn’t have existed. A broadcasting career that spanded more than five decades, Chuck was a teenager when he began at WBTA. He went on to work for WHAM (both TV and Radio) in Rochester before becoming an Associate Professor of Communications at Genesee Community College.
Chuck’s pride and joy other than his loving family was WGCC. His stories about multiple trips to Washington to the FCC in order to get us our broadcast license and dedication to the students and the radio station was what made Chuck above and beyond everyone else.
We all have our own Chuck stories. We do ask for those to be shared on the page and we will make sure that the family sees them.
We extend our deepest condolences to Chuck’s family, especially his wife Mary and their kids and grandchildren. Chuck’s influence lives on in every story told, every broadcast shared, and every student he mentored.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the Salvation Army, a cause close to Chuck’s heart.
Rest easy, Chuck. You taught us how to speak with purpose — and more importantly — how to listen.
