I’m not sharing this to proselytize, argue religion, or trigger anybody’s religious wounds or trauma.

I’m sharing it because Amos 6:3-6 speaks to today.

A society can become so comfortable that it loses the ability to ‘grieve’ what is happening right in front of it. People can feast, entertain themselves, build influence, build and protect wealth, and still be spiritually sick.

The issue is not comfort by itself… but comfort without conscience.

The issue is not success alone… but success that can see and cause suffering and feel nothing.

This is the sickness I see in our country. It’s just just greed, gluttony, and corruption with consequences or conscience…but the indifference that accompanies it.

And maybe the invitation is not despair.

Maybe the invitation is to wake up before we become the kind of people who can no longer feel what should break our hearts.

Don’t allow anger, even when appropriate, to metastasize into hate. I straddled that fence. I know what you feel. I’ve felt it often.

To love those who do harm, via ignorance or entitlement, is the greatest of challenges.

However, we don’t need anger to shield us from the deep grief we carry… for what we lost, what we thought we’d have, for who we thought others were and are not.

We can carry this and not collapse from the weight of it, just as we have many times before.

Witness it. Then weep for it.
