School Zone Safety Reminder from the Battle Ground Police Department
The BGPD would like to remind our community that schools have been back in session for three weeks. Unfortunately, our officers continue to witness a concerning number of drivers speeding through school zones and failing to yield to children in crosswalks. This concern is made greater by the fact that there are currently very few crossing guards available to assist students.
To help keep our students safe, BGPD officers have been conducting daily patrols in school zones with focused traffic enforcement. Due to the high number of violations, BGPD recently partnered with Target Zero, a statewide program that brings together multiple law-enforcement agencies with the goal of reducing traffic collisions.
On Thursday, 09/11/25, BGPD and Target Zero conducted a joint enforcement operation in the area of Daybreak Schools, located at NW 20th Avenue and NE 239th Street. Officer Jeff Cabanting-Rafael, one of the BGPD officers assigned, conducted an impressive 32 traffic stops in a single shift. Multiple citations were issued, including one for reckless driving after a motorist was caught traveling more than double the posted speed limit in a school zone, at 45 mph in a posted 20 mph with children present and crossing the street.
We are grateful to our partner agencies who joined us in this important enforcement effort. BGPD officers will remain vigilant in protecting school zones, because the safety of our students remains a top priority.
We ask all drivers to:
✅ Obey posted speed limits, especially in school zones.
👀 Watch closely for children crossing, as crossing-guard coverage is limited.
⚠️ Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.
🚔 Remember that in addition to speed enforcement, BGPD will be conducting crosswalk enforcement operations.
Safe driving is more than avoiding a costly ticket or higher insurance, it can prevent a tragedy and protect the lives of our students.
Thank you for your attention to this important safety reminder, and for doing your part to keep our children safe.
