“Women’s history as a whole needs to be taught equitably as part of any historical discussion or course. But women have often been left out of the historical narratives and textbooks creating the need for Women’s History Month. Coverage of women tends to focus on those women who left many documents and a robust track record. Female wage earners, therefore, are often left out of the conversation since their personal records weren’t donated to an archive. By looking at trade unions and their involvement in organized movements, we can learn their past.”

In this short video, Dr. Amy French of the Delta College History Department tells a story of Wage-Earning Women and the Suffrage Movement. https://youtu.be/VeEo68nqfR4

Dr. Amy French of the Delta College History Department gives a short accounting of the role wage-earning women played in the US Suffrage Movement.

A story of triumph!

2021 continues as a celebration of the valiant women of the vote and their stories. The women in your life have stories of triumph at the voting booth and continued fights for equality and justice. History textbooks are often filled with stories of famous people, but everyone's past is important and deserves to be told. Take this opportunity, Women’s History Month, to ask a woman in your life the following questions. Record your interview in an oral history style or more informally and share your answers here on facebook or join the discussion on our new WHM discussion board! https://library.delta.edu/whm

• What is your name? Can you please spell your name for me?
• Tell me about the place you grew up and the people you grew up with?
• As a woman, what was a challenge you faced growing up?
• Have you ever voted?
• What do you remember the first time you voted or a particularly memorable voting experience?
• What does it mean to you to be able to vote?
• Can you tell me about a time when you felt like you were being treated differently because of your gender or race?
